Unopened 1953 proof set arrived. Opening it live.
The proof set was on from this thread: http://forums.collectors.com/messageview.cfm?catid=26&threadid=839215
It just arrived today. Here's the top of the box.

Here are the sides that are taped up.

Here's the bottom and other two sides. It obviously had what looks like scotch tape across it at one time. The residue seems pretty old, it's "crystalized" and feels rough like sandpaper.

So, what do you think? A fools errand or do DCAM gems await?

<< <i>I thought you said he had other 1953 Proof Sets and the one you bought was not part of the 5 pictured? If so, then you purchased this from the same seller as the one mentioned in the other thread...correct.

The unopened lot the dealer had contained more than 5 sets. He just had an auction for 5 of the sets. I don't know if this set was in the ebay picture or not.
More to come...........
First side open....
Cutting the other side......
It's ready to open........
<< <i>Hopefully we won't have to change your handle to "Geraldo" >>
If I get a box of washers, then we might have to change it.
Now stop with the 'useless' posts and let's see some more photos!
Seriously, good luck.
I'd open several sets - if no cameos or varieties, I'd sell the rest as unopened "lottery tickets" to maximize my resale prices.
Of course there is still a chance of a big score, but cameos tend to come in "runs".

Man, they pack the tissue paper in there pretty tight.
Great, more tissue paper.
I don't think I got a box of washers, you can see the copper color of the penny through the tissue paper.
Here are the coins! The cello is pretty brittle, in fact, the half was actually loose.

Exactly what most dealers do when they purchase groups of unopened sets. Spot check a few, and dump the rest as unopened.

Boy, this is taking a long time.....they must be way ugly or........ka...ching!
Drawing upon vast knowledge and experience
1. significant frost on the devices on both sides of the coins;
2. possibly, just possibly, black watery mirrored fields.
In otherwords, I may have found a silver Cameo trifecta hiding in plain sight. Even better would be a tio of coins with minimal or no hairlines.
The nickel and cent are so obscured by the damaged holder that I can not even get a good view of them. Maybe they will also be nice.
I will am picking up the set tomorrow and can hardly wait to liberate the three coins from the damaged holder; and to possibly remove the milky haze.
Back to the OP, I hope he scores some DCAM's in the unopened 53 set.
(Just think of city streets clogged with a hundred thousand horses each generating 15 lbs of manure every day...)

So, based upon what he saw, I wonder if they went out for steak & lobster or burgers.

Priceless
Photos didn't turn out that good through the cello, but here we go anyway.
Here's the cent.....
It's a nice PR66-67 Red in my opinion. No haze but no cameo.
Here's the nickel....
Bad photo, but I'm 99% certain this will get a 66-67 CAM. It also has uniform toning with little to no haze. I'm definitely sending this to PCGS for slabbing.
Here's the dime....
Brilliant proof, no haze. Not worth slabbing.
Here's the quarter.....
This one is odd, obverse is mirrored, reverse is like a circulation strike with cartwheel luster. No toning and little or no haze. Not worth slabbing.
Here's the half.....
A brilliant proof, no cameo.
So, I'll send in the nickel and half, and maybe the cent. If the nickel cams, I'll consider the whole episode a wash.
In the end, I'm happy with it. It was quite a bit of entertainment for the cost and maybe I'll get a cam to add to my collection of 50's proof sets.
I'll try and get some better pics of the nickel and half tomorrow out of the cello.
When I get the grades back, I'll let everyone know how it turned out.
