Recent crusty seated half purchases!

A couple of recent purchases - these are tough to find unmessed with. The 1848 is the first I've seen of that date in ages, especially in the look I like. The 1861 is another one where I had to chase it down.

1861 PCGS XF-45

I might get a few shots thrown at me but my experience tells me the 1848 has been cleaned (maybe just soap and water) at some time.
Look at the amount and thickness of the 'crustiness' (or dirt) around the relief points (letters, date and profile).
In my opinion, this doesn't occur without the whole coin being dirty.
Currently, the fields aren't, so I conclude the coin has been cleaned in some way before.

No shots coming your way, I figured that could have happened, but perhaps long ago. I wonder if it circulated or was carried around some as a pocket piece afterwards? Either way, it looks way better than the numerous blast white, circulated examples I keep running across. Halves like the below just make me cringe:
Washed out #1
Washed out #2
Washed out #3

I agree.
I'd definitely choose yours over any white washed out coin.

Agreed. Happens a lot in Barber Halves as well. And they are still among the most desirable visually, and fully deserving of certification. I would submit that if you aggressively thumbed your '61 for a minute it would look exactly like the '48. I'm sure that's what many collectors of old did before they socked them away for keeps.
Nice coins!

also downloaded photoscape software and gave that a try. very easy.
any feedback on them (they are raw) would be appreciated.
Your halves appear to be pretty high grade, but the lighting on the photos makes it kind of tough to give good (or correct) feedback. I'm not sure if they are toned or are all white, dipped or natural so I'll withhold judgement. Looks like you just need an extra light source on your coins to male them 'pop', it appears you just one one light source coming from the left side.

Love 'em. Quite an appealing collecting avenue, I would think. Of course I had to peek at the rest of your collection. Wow, very impressive.
Your proof and the 1853 NGC 53 really leapt off the page for me. Now you just need some great black-and-white CircCams in there.
Here's a common-date circ I just traded away. It's not a real black-and-white CircCam, either, but the contrast is there.
Bravo! I love looking at coins like this. Keep up the pursuit!

You got THAT right!
I'm especially likin' that '57-O and the obverse. And based on the pictures, that 1846 looks the most awesome to me- that obverse looks fantastic.
