He has several other cent roll auctions with earlier dimes on the ends. All rolls have the same paper and same style of end crimping. He's obviously salting his rolls and I doubt if anyone will fall for this scam.

    I'll second that statement!

Folks do not seem to understand that coin rolling machines are available for purchase on the open market which enables these hucksters to create ANY type of roll their greedy little minds can dream up.

Makes me think of that seller who was selling "old-timey" "rolls" of
Morgan dollars from a "Nevada" "bank" (which mysteriously existed
only on eBay, not in any banking or financial records, history books,
etc.). After he'd sold a few and gained the attention of doubters and
mythbusters, he tried to juice up the "authenticity" of the wrappers
with a modern inkjet image of an eagle (if memory serves) --- in full
color, with a modern sans-serif font completely out of character for
the era he was trying to evoke.

    Oy vey.

No, I wont neg him because he says on the listing that it is a roll of pennies with dimes on both ends. He says there might be some surprises

inside. What will be a surprise if s if there is anything good in there. I am just in a playful mood and want to bust his butt a little bit and probably

will not neg him unless the rest of the roll is all memorials. Then he would deserve it.

Here's the most ridiculous fake shotgun roll I've seen so far:
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260898128247

    imageimage

No offense, but you'd have to be a complete idiot to think this is anything other than a dealer-manufactured novelty item. I have to give him credit though... it must have been a real pain to crimp that roll tight enough without having the gold pieces fall out.

Well, the seller never claims it's q a 1916-D only that it could be...there is nothing technically wrong with that in the listing title or description, it's a fantasy idea and nothing more. Wouldn't it be cool if the seller screwed up and put a genuine 16-D in there....only then would you have the last laugh.

The seller must have been a farmer because they sure know how to plant a seed.

The silly thing is that there are countless people that buy these things on ebay. It's been done for years.

They use their own crimping machine or the cheapo crimping hand tool and modern rolls or even re-crimped used rolls.
The statements like "unsearched by me" or "I took a hoard to a bank to be rolled" are tough to prove, how many people wouldn't search a hoard or what bank rolls stuff as a favor or even for a fee?
They also salt up their feedback by either throwing in a few decent coins or even throwing in a $3 fake S-VDB or 55 DDO because the buyer that finds it will say "WOW found a 55 DDO" not thinking it's fake because it wasn't sold alone.

So many of these have an old dime or reverse with a VDB showing or whatever.... You know they're purposely done.

    LOL!

They need to invent a 1916-D Mercury dime with the "D" on the obverse, so both date and mintmark are conveniently visible.

    Other end-of-the-roll packaging options:

    - A Brilliant Uncirculated Franklin half dollar and an off-center Matron Head large cent.

    - A Maria Theresa silver thaler and the deed to a small farmstead in Oklahoma.

    - A Spanish doubloon and the fender of a 1929 Mercedes SSK.

Description: These are rolls of unsearched wheat cents

OK, common sense question, if you have exposed dimes on the ends of the penny roll, how do you know there are 48 WHEAT cents between them?

And eBay is not the only venue for this crap: check out the December 20th issue of Numismatic News. Page 44. Someone there has the biggest selection of made-up rolls I've ever seen.

How can you possibly say it's an unsearched wheat cent roll when the end coins are both Indian cents?

And what exactly would you complain about? While these rolls may not be what some of the "elitists" that post to this board may purchase, did it ever occur to you that there may actually be people that enjoy getting and searching these rolls and that the relatively small amount paid for these rolls is insignificant?

I'll admit to buying some of these rolls off eBay, but I base my bid on just the two visible coins and assume the rest of the roll will be worth $.48. You'd be surprised how often you can cherrypick unattributed varieties on the ends of those unsearched rolls.

Those N.F. String & Son wrappers aren't "old" looking by any stretch of the imagination. Any time you see a roll with red stripes on it like that, it is indicative of modern A.B.A. color-coded paper. In fact, you can buy them directly from the manufacturer for $7.85 + shipping per case of 1,000.
