To me, a white whale should be a card that doesn't show up for years at a time, maybe even just a rumor that it exists at all. Not a card that's readily available but you just have to have the balls to spend more money than you're comfortable with.

Not that this card should be that big a deal, but a 1970 Topps Tony Perez base card in PSA 8 that is dead-centered or close to dead-centered. I've never seen one for sale.

Agree...and I just found one of mine that fits this description and probably overpaid even though I couldn't really afford it. I hadn't seen another for sale and only knew of a few that exist.

My true white whale right now is a signed 1971 Topps Wayne Maki card. He died in 1973. The one I just bought I'll post when it arrives. Same set.

    Hey guys,

Mine was up on ebay earlier this year in a Jsa/Bgs holder for 5k. Its def not a $5000 card. The seller wouldnt budge an inch and it never sold.

Its a 1992 Gulf Coast League signed Derek Jeter card. I'm desperatley searching for one.

2nd is a 1992 Classic C3 signed Derek Jeter. I had one about 6 years a go and sold it to my friend and I never seen another one again.

3rd is a 2001 Arizona Fall League Jose A Pujols signed card.

    Best regards!

Matty, I'll slip over to Grote's place and rip all his 1975 Mini stash. He has to have one in there someplace.

I probably shouldn't have posted it first, huh.

By all means rip away! Seriously, a Davis even in PSA 9 would probably pay for a couple boxes.
A Claudell Washington in 9 is another whale-worthy mini.
Heck, a POP 5 Fred Stanley in 9 sold a few months back for $1100.

76 Brett in 9+ is another very rare card for sale. One surfaced on the bay recently but I don't think it sold.

Can't remember the last truly gem 80 Henderson I saw for sale.

Schmidt RC in 10 is another. I guess with seminal cards like that, when they get sold to a private collector they rarely surface again.

Actually, come to think of it, as an unopened collector I remember at first just dreaming aloud with my cousin about a 75 cello with Brett and Yount on it even existing. That was a couple years ago. Then I heard one sold. Then I heard there was another. That became a true white whale in that it apparently existed but was who knows where. Then I was contacted by its owner and worked out a deal. So exciting when you actually get the white whale.

I think a 1976 Brett in a PSA 10 would be the ultimate card. Is one even in existence???

Mine would have to be 1968 Mira arnold palmer. I have been checking ebay for about 4 years and have never seen one for sale. The funny thing is that I started looking for this card for my rookie collection before I knew about the 1965 bancroft card.... So the mira card isn't even his rookie but since I spent so much time looking for it I still want it.

An SGC 98 sold in the last few months for $26k or so....it would be interesting to see if it could cross over to a PSA 10 and literally double its value.

One of my white whales is a PSA 9 -- I just haven't seen any come up recently. A LOT of fakes, however!

Mine isn't really a card but I'll say it anyway: a 1954 Roy Campanella Coca Cola cardboard advertisement. I saw one at the last National in Baltimore and passed on it because I didn't know it existed and thought it might be fake. The sad thing is that it was for sale for $600 and I actually had the money for it. image

Sorry - I had to share since it's completely relevant to this thread. When I originally posted this, my white whale was in an eBay auction. Only five of these have been graded by PSA - in fact, I didn't even want to mention the exact card for fear that I might be outbid by someone else who collects vintage boxing (there are a couple of others besides me). Anyways, I ended up winning the auction today for half of what my max snipe was set at - which is a victory unto itself. It might not seem like much to most of you - but this is a card I've been looking for for quite some time. Thanks for letting me share this victory.

Mine is a Japanese card from 1958 that was supposed to depict Chico Barbon of the Hankyu Braves, however, somehow a picture of Jackie Robinson made it onto the card. Robinson had been to Japan the previous year, when major leaguers went over to play in All-star Exhibition games. Anyway, this is my white whale. I have only ever seen 1 sell in any auction and it was a long time ago.

Like I said, the Wayne Maki card became my new white whale after adding this today:

Plante died February 27, 1986 but lived many years after his retirement between Switzerland and Canada and while I'm sure there are a few of these out there, I hadn't ever seen one for sale until this popped up last week. So excited to add it to my set. Just seeing that the package had been delivered was exciting. Looks even better than the scan in person.
