Are you a Hunter or a Gatherer?
I used to be a gatherer but in the last 10 years i've started to become a hunter. Not all traits are found in all people but I feel there's a difference between the 2 and not much crossover. Feel free to add / delete traits or just move along
.
Hunter: Goes to big shows, looks at inventory online regularly, visits auction sites regularly, goes to small shows, talks to a few (or many) dealers, checks coin forums for action, wade through thousands of ick coins at local estate sales, MAY have a large number of coins but probably less than a gatherer, reads anything and everything available regarding perceived populations of coins, probably focused on a certain denomination or a grade, possibly a type collector but not just "any" coin, might be thought of as "picky" but thinks of himself as discerning,
Gatherer: buys coins because more is better, migh contact a dealer and order them to pick me up a series or buy a complete set from Ebay or similar, could very well have some nice coins but also hundreds of pounds of common circulated stuff, either doesn't like the "search" or doesn't have time for it,
I've gone from 12,000 coins or so down to a couple hundred with one series I spend almost all my time on. I will pick up a nice coin if I see one I really like but I can also go a year without a purchase.
any thoughts? which are you?

Practice makes perfect & nobody is perfect. So, practice being nobody and be perfect !
I'd rather have one HUGE buck on my wall that I worked for than a room full of stuffed squirrels I shot off my deck. i'm more proud of the coins I've hunted and could take or leave most of the rest.

I don't spend nearly as much energy searching as your hunter, but I certainly don't fit your gatherer mold either. I only have about 25 coins in my entire collection. I prefer to work with a few specialist dealers, occasionally monitor the major auctions and other dealers' websites, and "let the coins come to me".
<< <i>Interesting definitions for those terms.

Intense Hunter
60 years into this hobby and I'm still working on my Lincoln set!
The gatherer in me is a collector....
I give away money. I collect money.
I don’t love money . I do love the Lord God.
