Across the street is not accepting sealed sets at coin shows. PCGS, on the other hand, is gving great service to its customers. >>
Yeah great service they will quickly rescind once they see how big these boxes are or they will take very few. OTOH they may confirm they are legitimately sealed and open the boxes on the spot and pack them more effificiently however I highly doubt they will be equipped with an unpackin/packing operation at a coin show.
Perhaps PCGS will allow us to open the sealed box, remove the coins and submit them in their capsules. They did that for my UHR First Strike where they had to verify the postmark date on the sealed box. They took the coin and I took all of the OGP material back with me.
I plan to take boxcutters and 2x2 flips with me to make it easy on them.
Just received my box of 5 sets. I plan to submit unopened to PCGS for grading but have a sincere question for which I would appreciate any feedback. Why should I spend an extra $450.00 for the "First Strike" designation for 25 coins when certain issues of the 5 ounce "First Strike" pucks are actually valued lower than their non-designated "brothers" (Same coin, same grade but non-First Strike issues are valued higher, per PCGS price guide, than the "First Strikes")? Thanks in advance for any pro or con arguments.

Maybe they will let you cherry pick them while you stand there too. Though I think thats just a benefit for the dealers.
I went with the tried and true method. USPS Express. Placed the mint's box in a slightly larger one. 5 sets, 5K insurance, $118.00 They will be at PCGS tomorrow.

On the UHR, they actually handed me the coin and let me look at it before they took it back. I wonder what would've happened if I saw a scratch and told them, "I changed my mind. I don't want to submit it."
PCGS used to hold "Collector Fridays" where you drop off your submission in person. They ended the practice a couple months ago, much to my dismay (and many others) >>

We need to BE SURE that these will be accepted for grading though because, in the past, they were not accepted.

You and your friend will decide. PCGS will send you back 50 graded coins, you guys break them into sets. You split the 70s, then the 69s, etc. You need to decide ahead of time how you will determine who gets the extra one if there are an odd number of one grade. You might even agree ahead of time that if there is a full set of 70s you will sell and split the money. Maybe even agree to each keep a full set of one grade, sell the rest and split the money. Keep in mind there will be a good market for individually graded coins as collectors try to make their sets consistent (all 70s or 69s). The two of you might even agree to sell any odd number of a certain grade as an individual coin.
Otherwise, yes, you will have to pay the extra money to grade each box seperately.

the friend's coins are all going to be the 69's .... obviously! sheesh!
could pack them and ship them together, but with two sub forms -- one on each box. The sub number would show which box is which. Obviously, two return shipping charges and two $8 service fee charges would be paid.

It's still Snail Mail. Anything over 13 oz falls in the priority rate fees and will not speed up your delivery if mailed via registered mail.

Registered, insured:
-Safest, I mail hundreds a year, never lost one. Each postal employee that takes possession of it signs for it. -Slowest 5-10 days -An "extra service" added to either first class or priority mailing fee. You pay a mailing fee plus the registered fee. -If under 13 oz. mails at the cheaper first class mailing fee, if over mails at priority mailing fee. -Since it is an extra service for priority, you can take advantage of priority flat rate mailing fee with the registered fee added. -Registered fee climbs as insurance coverage climbs, but nowhere near as fast as priority insurance climbs. -Cheaper than regular priority insured if value is over $750 (priority insurance rates get expensive, while cheaper insurance rates are built into registered fee). -Priority registered is still slow, only difference is you are paying a higher mailing fee (priority) because of the weight. -If your buyer is looking for fast shipment (trying to meet 30 day first strike deadline) registered needs to be reconsidered. -Allows up to $25K insurance while express allows up to $5K insurance. -Requires paper tape over all package seams so clerk can apply tamperproof stamped seal. Glue back tape hard to find, available at Staples. Tape is required only over seams, not the entire package. -Electronic return receipt can be purchased in lieu of more expensive signature confirmation. Meets ebay/paypal requirement for signature confirmation and requires no form, just ask for it when you ship. Provides on line viewing of receiving signature and in most cases in-route tracking. -Has to be purchased at post office counter, no on-line registered label purchasing. -Requires PS Form 3806 (4x4 white form), available at all PO customer counter areas.
I use it on most everything I sell. I walk up to the counter, hand the clerk the package and the form and say "first class registered insured with electronic return receipt." If it is over 13 oz. clerk will tell me it has to go at priority mailing rate. Do not pay the higher priority mailing fee if it does not require it (under 13 oz.). Again going priority makes no difference on delivery time.
I can mail a gold coin registered insured ($1800) for about $20.
Express starts at around $20. There is only one flat rate express offered and it is the cardboard envelope, $20. All other express gets expensive as weight increases. However, I can safely fit 3 graded coins in a bubble envelope that goes inside the cardboard flat rate envelope and mail insured ($2000) for about $20-$22. Sometimes I can get a high dollar small shipment to my customer faster at about the same cost as registered using the express flat rate envelope.

Call US Air, book flight expecting $122 cost, but pay $105.... appraently the voucher part is also not subjected to taxes so your $275 voucher really saves you $302. Make sure to include your United (vice US Air) FF number, as you are about 3,000 miles short of premier executive status for next year.
Use your total rewards coupon to get two free hotel nights at a hotel near the Venetian.
Place the boxes of coins in your carry on bag. Add an official looking letter stating that while the boxes may be X-rayed, the boxes may not be opened for inspection. Handcuff carry on to arm. Act calm when TSA offcials wrinkle forwaead as you coins are x-rayed. Board aircraft, place carryon in overhead. Ensure you have aisle seat so your left arm can remain raised and reach the carry on bin door. Land at LAS. Pay $6.50 for shuttle to hotel. Pay $10 hotel fee to get 2 free nights. Walk coins to Venetian hotel. Discover handcuff key is still at home. Doh - insert new step in instructions.... place handcuff key in wallet.
Will they grade and slab these sets at the Baltimore show using show gold 10 coin minimum? Figure 45+18=63 per coin, and pick up at the end of the show?
I'm thinking of getting 30 sets graded? Not interested however in making the trip to just drop them off...Thanks

Are you absolutely sure on this? As an example - if I bought a Mickey Mantle card in 1960 for 5 cents in a pack of cards, will they only insure the 5 cents? It seems like they would reimburse the actual value.

If you bought it for 5 cents and sold it for $250 it is insurable for $250 which would be its true value because that is what someone paid for it.....
You couldn't use a catalog value of $500 if the true value (sale price) was only $250
If you were selling the coins on Ebay and had a single set price of $850 THAT would be the value...sending for grading it would be your purchase price...

So what was the definitive answer to what the best and cheapest way to send 10 sets of the 25th anniversary sets? Most of the answers seems to be about 5 sets or less.

Yes, BUT they will charge you postage. I listened to someone try to argue with a clerk saying that he shouldn't have to pay for postage if all the clerk has to do is go put it in the recipient's PO box. You will be able to "send" it Parcel Post for about $22 for a 70 pound box, and it will probably be "delivered" same day.

I wasn't referring to show grading. I was referring to simply dropping off your submission, saving the postage fees of sending them to PCGS. I believe they'll accept any drop-off submission, space permitting.
Big heavy sealed boxes through airport security that probably look weird under the x-ray machine just doesn't sound like it will happen. Especially during the holidays. I wouldn't even count on them staying sealed if you checked it as luggage to ride in the bottom part of the plane.

the TSA guy made me open a box and missed my flight. i had gotten there late with little time to spare as it was.
i wont take sealed boxes again.
i repackaged my box of 5 in a slightly larger box and sent it express at $77.

actually you did not get the same results. pcgs does work saturdays as my package was picked up this morning. your package is delivered to the newport beach PO and pcgs picks the packages up there. your package will be picked up on monday. i paid more to get in front of you.

the TSA guy made me open a box and missed my flight. i had gotten there late with little time to spare as it was.
i wont take sealed boxes again.
i repackaged my box of 5 in a slightly larger box and sent it express at $77.

I got the same exact results with Priority Mail...Mailed out from the East Coast on Thursday...arrived at PCGS today, but no one to sign for the package...PCGS don't be woikin on Saturday. BTW my parcel cost a heck of a lot less to mail. >>
actually you did not get the same results. pcgs does work saturdays as my package was picked up this morning. your package is delivered to the newport beach PO and pcgs picks the packages up there. your package will be picked up on monday. i paid more to get in front of you. >>

I wish to find out what is the cost of grading as i am quite confusing after reading the service and fees.
My Questions :
1. I wish to send in one mint sealed box with 5 sets inside. what is the total grading cost ?
2. I will be sending from overseas, and if the package reached PCGS after 30 days, will my graded coins get the FS if it is in the mint sealed condition.

No clue on the overseas cost. If an APO then they would be the same as the quotes from the states.
Packing Slip inside box will keep you FS eligible...no issue with delayed delivery
I believe there is no hidden fee for overseas submitter (I have submitted US and non-US notes to PCGS Currency)
I just confused over various services for my 25th Anniversary set.
example. Do i send in as MODERN ($14) with FS label ($18) = $32 per coin ? If I send in 5 sets with 5 coins per set = $32 * 25 = $800 ??
Let us assume returned shipment fee is $62.15 based on pacific Region (21-30 coins)

PCGS site also stated that Collectors Club membership is required for all submissions. I do have Collectors Club membership but it is for PCGS Currency. Is the membership the same since it is also known as Collectors Club membership ? Can i send in my coin for grading with my Collectors Club membership (PCGS-C)?
This is an insurance question If somehow a 16lb box sent priority mail was misplaced-assuming I paid for 4k of insurance- would the USPS reimburse me for $4000 the going rate on ebay ? or would they only reimburse me for the $1500 I purchased the coins at?

Across the street is not accepting sealed sets at coin shows. PCGS, on the other hand, is gving great service to its customers. >>
Yeah great service they will quickly rescind once they see how big these boxes are or they will take very few. OTOH they may confirm they are legitimately sealed and open the boxes on the spot and pack them more effificiently however I highly doubt they will be equipped with an unpackin/packing operation at a coin show.
I plan to take boxcutters and 2x2 flips with me to make it easy on them.

On the UHR, they actually handed me the coin and let me look at it before they took it back. I wonder what would've happened if I saw a scratch and told them, "I changed my mind. I don't want to submit it."

The answer is: No.
PCGS used to hold "Collector Fridays" where you drop off your submission in person. They ended the practice a couple months ago, much to my dismay (and many others) >>

You and your friend will decide. PCGS will send you back 50 graded coins, you guys break them into sets. You split the 70s, then the 69s, etc. You need to decide ahead of time how you will determine who gets the extra one if there are an odd number of one grade. You might even agree ahead of time that if there is a full set of 70s you will sell and split the money. Maybe even agree to each keep a full set of one grade, sell the rest and split the money. Keep in mind there will be a good market for individually graded coins as collectors try to make their sets consistent (all 70s or 69s). The two of you might even agree to sell any odd number of a certain grade as an individual coin.
Otherwise, yes, you will have to pay the extra money to grade each box seperately.

It's still Snail Mail. Anything over 13 oz falls in the priority rate fees and will not speed up your delivery if mailed via registered mail.

Registered, insured:
-Safest, I mail hundreds a year, never lost one. Each postal employee that takes possession of it signs for it.
-Slowest 5-10 days
-An "extra service" added to either first class or priority mailing fee. You pay a mailing fee plus the registered fee.
-If under 13 oz. mails at the cheaper first class mailing fee, if over mails at priority mailing fee.
-Since it is an extra service for priority, you can take advantage of priority flat rate mailing fee with the registered fee added.
-Registered fee climbs as insurance coverage climbs, but nowhere near as fast as priority insurance climbs.
-Cheaper than regular priority insured if value is over $750 (priority insurance rates get expensive, while cheaper insurance rates are built into registered fee).
-Priority registered is still slow, only difference is you are paying a higher mailing fee (priority) because of the weight.
-If your buyer is looking for fast shipment (trying to meet 30 day first strike deadline) registered needs to be reconsidered.
-Allows up to $25K insurance while express allows up to $5K insurance.
-Requires paper tape over all package seams so clerk can apply tamperproof stamped seal. Glue back tape hard to find, available at Staples. Tape is required only over seams, not the entire package.
-Electronic return receipt can be purchased in lieu of more expensive signature confirmation. Meets ebay/paypal requirement for signature confirmation and requires no form, just ask for it when you ship. Provides on line viewing of receiving signature and in most cases in-route tracking.
-Has to be purchased at post office counter, no on-line registered label purchasing.
-Requires PS Form 3806 (4x4 white form), available at all PO customer counter areas.
I use it on most everything I sell. I walk up to the counter, hand the clerk the package and the form and say "first class registered insured with electronic return receipt." If it is over 13 oz. clerk will tell me it has to go at priority mailing rate. Do not pay the higher priority mailing fee if it does not require it (under 13 oz.). Again going priority makes no difference on delivery time.
I can mail a gold coin registered insured ($1800) for about $20.
Express starts at around $20. There is only one flat rate express offered and it is the cardboard envelope, $20. All other express gets expensive as weight increases. However, I can safely fit 3 graded coins in a bubble envelope that goes inside the cardboard flat rate envelope and mail insured ($2000) for about $20-$22. Sometimes I can get a high dollar small shipment to my customer faster at about the same cost as registered using the express flat rate envelope.

Place the boxes of coins in your carry on bag. Add an official looking letter stating that while the boxes may be X-rayed, the boxes may not be opened for inspection. Handcuff carry on to arm. Act calm when TSA offcials wrinkle forwaead as you coins are x-rayed. Board aircraft, place carryon in overhead. Ensure you have aisle seat so your left arm can remain raised and reach the carry on bin door. Land at LAS. Pay $6.50 for shuttle to hotel. Pay $10 hotel fee to get 2 free nights. Walk coins to Venetian hotel. Discover handcuff key is still at home. Doh - insert new step in instructions.... place handcuff key in wallet.

Are you absolutely sure on this? As an example - if I bought a Mickey Mantle card in 1960 for 5 cents in a pack of cards, will they only insure the 5 cents? It seems like they would reimburse the actual value.

If you bought it for 5 cents and sold it for $250 it is insurable for $250 which would be its true value because that is what someone paid for it.....
You couldn't use a catalog value of $500 if the true value (sale price) was only $250
If you were selling the coins on Ebay and had a single set price of $850 THAT would be the value...sending for grading it would be your purchase price...

Yes, BUT they will charge you postage. I listened to someone try to argue with a clerk saying that he shouldn't have to pay for postage if all the clerk has to do is go put it in the recipient's PO box. You will be able to "send" it Parcel Post for about $22 for a 70 pound box, and it will probably be "delivered" same day.

I wasn't referring to show grading. I was referring to simply dropping off your submission, saving the postage fees of sending them to PCGS. I believe they'll accept any drop-off submission, space permitting.
I thought the limit was five per household!

i took 5 sealed mint boxes of 2009 LP1 lincoln cents in my carry on on an atlanta to ny flight and that xray triggered a search.
the TSA guy made me open a box and missed my flight. i had gotten there late with little time to spare as it was.
i wont take sealed boxes again.
i repackaged my box of 5 in a slightly larger box and sent it express at $77.

I got the same exact results with Priority Mail...Mailed out from the East Coast on Thursday...arrived at PCGS today, but no one to sign for the package...PCGS don't be woikin on Saturday. BTW my parcel cost a heck of a lot less to mail.

actually you did not get the same results. pcgs does work saturdays as my package was picked up this morning. your package is delivered to the newport beach PO and pcgs picks the packages up there. your package will be picked up on monday. i paid more to get in front of you.

This is my first time having thought of sending my 25th Anniversary Sets to PCGS for grading.
I wish to find out what is the cost of grading as i am quite confusing after reading the service and fees.
My Questions :
1. I wish to send in one mint sealed box with 5 sets inside. what is the total grading cost ?
2. I will be sending from overseas, and if the package reached PCGS after 30 days, will my graded coins get the FS if it is in the mint sealed condition.

No clue on the overseas cost. If an APO then they would be the same as the quotes from the states.
Packing Slip inside box will keep you FS eligible...no issue with delayed delivery
I just confused over various services for my 25th Anniversary set.
example.
Do i send in as MODERN ($14) with FS label ($18) = $32 per coin ?
If I send in 5 sets with 5 coins per set = $32 * 25 = $800 ??
Let us assume returned shipment fee is $62.15 based on pacific Region (21-30 coins)
I hope someone who have sent in can let me know the price of sending the 5 sets.
PCGS site also stated that Collectors Club membership is required for all submissions.
I do have Collectors Club membership but it is for PCGS Currency.
Is the membership the same since it is also known as Collectors Club membership ?
Can i send in my coin for grading with my Collectors Club membership (PCGS-C)?

Ralph has been working O.T, ... PCGS logged my 1st shipment in on Monday ... 2d on Tuesday...now the waiting game begins.
