25 th Anniversity Set damages US Mint Collector Base

Mint shoots itself in foot with one 100000 Set Issue.

For all the Collectors of ASE's that tried, but were left out with no chance for

coins to complete thier sets will loose interest and leave the Mint going back

to TAXPAYERS for funding in order to sell to sell to the few(less than 20,000)

that will get coins.

  • Thanks for the responce from Master, expert, veteran, and Senior posters that have been a mint customer
for years and can remember how US Mint with Congress's Money kept looking for a CEO that would
    see the mint stand alone.
I bought the product for 50 years in support of U.S Mint, not to profit from it,but this issue will REDUCE Revenue
from Collector Base for years to come.

Agreed it sucks. Agreed they did a crappy job.

But if you can afford $300, you can probably afford $450.
If my order doesn't go through I'll probably pony up in the aftermarket.

relictrader, I wrote "Huh?" because I really didn't understand your original post. Understand that in online forums there is much to be interpreted as written word is taken just for that, written word. This leaves up all emotion, meaning, sarcasm, etc up to the interpretation of the reader. Part of the reason the emoticons were put into place.

I can't speak for the rest, but this was the problem I ran into w/ your original post.

The 1995 W proof silver eagle had a much smaller mintage than this set and didn't hurt later years.

If I may, to remove all doubt:

Mint shoots itself in foot with one[,] 100000 Set Issue.

For all the Collectors of ASE's that tried, but were left out with no chance for

coins to complete thier sets. [the ASE collectors] will loose interest [which will] leave the Mint [to go back]

to TAXPAYERS for funding in order to sell to sell to the few(less than 20,000)

that will get coins [instead of the real collectors] in the future.

    About right?

    Interesting perspective by the OP.

Who knows? May have a valid point BUT low
mintage figures SHOULD equate to rarity & premiums.

Collectors were mad at the mint in 1995 when they forced collectors to buy the 1995 W through the 5 piece Gold and Silver Set. They did not buy. But I don't think they lost too many customers in the future. Do collectors have short memories? The mint will offer a bauble that will be irresistible to its customers no matter how mad they are at the mint.

    Huh?

    I wasn't mad.

    I just didn't buy.

Is it too late to complain now?

Oh wait, the US Mint didn't have a web site back then. They didn't even have a telephone order line.

Registries didn't exist either so there was no real "need" to have the 95-W.

Last but not least, the set was available for a long long time during 1995 via mail order which kinda makes this an apples to oranges comparison.

Folks NEED to realize that the "zero to 60" factor has completely changed from what it was in the past as given today's super quick "announcment to market" environment has created a whole new breed of dealer which moves quickly to extract their profits.

Preparation is the key and the coin collecting community had a full two months to prepare for that "Day of Inevitability". I thought I had a fool proof method which had served me well for three of the 5 oz Pucks but it failed miserably on the 27th. I had to resort to <gasp> the redial key!

Yes. It was painful. But it worked.

If folks had spent as much time on their redial keys as they apparently are with their complaints (HEY! Let's call Congress?), they'd have their sets on order.

The Mint actually has enhanced the various sets impacted by the recent 5 coin offering. Every set needs a key and some semi keys in order to remain popular. The 1995-W is obviously the key for this set. The reverse proof will be a semi-key.

As to the taxpayer comments, perhaps a review of the BILLIONS of dollars remitted to the Treasury general fund by the Mint without taking a cent of taxpayer money to run the operation will address that mistaken idea. Mint operations actually work to reduce either taxes or the deficit (your choice) as the reduce the cost of government.

For the record I did NOT get one of these sets.

So how does this "leave the Mint going back to TAXPAYERS for funding"?

    Not seeing the connection.

  • I agree with this original poster about the Mint losing customers. The Mint should have lowered their 5 limit to 3, personally I'm not complaining because I got my 5 sets, but there are customers who frequently buy all this US Mint garbage that is usually worth 1/2 what they paid for it a few yeears later or sometimes within months. Joe Schmo who has been buying US Mint quarter rolls for how many years, that are now worth nothing more than the quarters inside, now wants to buy a 2011 anniversary set and once again he has been a loyal customer buying all this novelty stuff over ther years that never really appreciates. He tries ordering on October 27 with no luck and he is left out because of the high household limits where most will end up in flippers hands even though he has been a loyal customer for how many years. He has bought garbage all these years and when there is finally a money maker that stands to be worth 5 times its original sale price as opposed to 1/5 of its original price like some prior stuff, he gets nothing.

It is too bad that loyal customers were left out and once again this is atributed to the Mint having a high limit of 5 per hh, if it were 3 then everyone who placed an order up until midnight on the 27th woudl have likely gotten a set and that way if someone missed the boat they either didn't know about these which is their own fault or they forgot which is their own fault, no one to blame but themselves. A 12 hour sellout would eliminate people who couldn't order because of work constraints or family errands, again they would have no one to blame but themselves, but with the Mint having a high hh limit and selling out so fast then there are legit arguments that th e Mint screwed up by not lowering the hh limits to 3.

Personally, I think we should all send a thank you card with a basket of fruit to the Mint for this major year-end gift!

I was able to get a set after a few hours of persistence on the internet. When the order thread was going, at lunch time on that thread I just said "screw it, I'm going to lunch" Came back and got my order in by about 3pm central. My plan was to simply flip it, but the longer time goes, the more I think I want to keep it. The bidding on ebay would have to exceed $750-800 for me to cut it loose. I know it's been going about that high now, but I don't want to sell until I have it in hand.

  • You are right. I was collecting silver dollars but when I found I could not get an 1804 because the Mint did not make enough I decided to quit.

I will chime in to the original post, which I disagree with. I am one of those people who always buys proof and mint sets...the old line "regular" customers. Each of the last 3 years though I have waited until the absolute last minute, because I consider myself and all the others who do this to be incredibly STUPID. Again, this year I am talking myself out of being that stupid, but unless hundreds of thousands of people quit buying the cr*p stuff, the mint won't change and since I already said that the millions who do this are incredibly STUPID...I don't think this little fiasco will do a d@mn thing. I don't think enough people to matter in the outside world even know it happened and even fewer care. IMHO. I think this year will finally be the year I quit. I hope, I hope, I hope.
