1909 VDB MS65 RED ummm don't think so
I've been "hornswaggled"!!!
After more than twenty years I've come to the conclusion that the coin I thought I had is a fake.
This is the only graded coin I've owned and I thought it was the real deal until I saw a close up. No way is this a MS 65 with those gouges on the reverse.
I should have used common sense when it looked like the plastic holder had been tampered with.

Edited to add that it is my experience that the lack of significant spotting and seemingly decent luster are more important to the grade than a few hits.

Fake?
Buy the coin not the holder. It took you 20 years to figure it out?
<< <i>Great thread. Would read again. >>
ngc?
anacs?
and besides being too blurry, it's too dark.
and if that background isn't really pink then the white balance is off, too.
...if it's in a NGC holder perhaps there is a photo on their site confirming the 'gouge'

Otherwise it looks good from what I can tell.
60 years into this hobby and I'm still working on my Lincoln set!

<< <i>Are you expecting perfection at the MS65 level??? If so, then what should an MS66 and above look like??? Marks like that are consistent with many MS65 Lincolns I've seen in both PCGS and NGC plastic. Like you said, live and learn.

Knowledge is the enemy of fear
But then again, I've seen better as well.

I kinda gotta disagree with this - please show me a better certified MS65RD 1909 VDB. All have some minor issue keeping them from 66 or 67 - be it spotting, nicks on obverse, diminished color or luster, etc. In the grand scheme of things, this coin is about as good as it gets at the grade level.
Looking at your cent, the grading is consistent with the MS-65 grade. You can compare it with this piece from my collection, which is graded MS-65. Red.
It's a NGC holder with some kind of damage on the top. Looks like it was opened, I don't know.
Thanks for all the feedback!
For $5-$10, you should just let NGC reslab it for you. And then you'll also be sure you're good to go.

I agree. And don't reholder it. That's a no-line fattie.
Lance.
No way you can do that

<< <i>I disagree with most, its fake and ugly. Will buy if it is priced accordingly. >>
Why would you want to buy something "fake and ugly"?
Thanks again to all who set me straight.
I don't post often, but when I do I gain knowledge.
Stay sharp my friends.
