1909 VDB MS65 RED ummm don't think so

I've been "hornswaggled"!!!
After more than twenty years I've come to the conclusion that the coin I thought I had is a fake.
This is the only graded coin I've owned and I thought it was the real deal until I saw a close up. No way is this a MS 65 with those gouges on the reverse.
I should have used common sense when it looked like the plastic holder had been tampered with.
Live and learn...

Are you expecting perfection at the MS65 level??? If so, then what should an MS66 and above look like??? Marks like that are consistent with many MS65 Lincolns I've seen in both PCGS and NGC plastic. Like you said, live and learn.

Edited to add that it is my experience that the lack of significant spotting and seemingly decent luster are more important to the grade than a few hits.

Looks right to me, other than the fact they graded it during a earthquakeimage

    whose holder is it???

    ngc?

    anacs?

and besides being too blurry, it's too dark.

and if that background isn't really pink then the white balance is off, too.

...if it's in a NGC holder perhaps there is a photo on their site confirming the 'gouge' image

I wouldn't grade it higher than 64 with that slice through the "O" and the other mark above the "N" on the reverse.

Otherwise it looks good from what I can tell.

MS 65 is a full 5 points away from perfect. From the photos, the coin looks nice, no major spots, color is pleasing, and the contact marks are minor (unless the "gouges" aren't showing up in the photo).

Show us some better photos, if possible. But based on what I can see I don't have a problem with MS65.

The photos might be a bit blurry but I think the grade seems appropriate.

65 can be a very tricky grade. You really have to look. Sometimes they're great, sometimes you wonder, "What the heck?" I'd say 65 is a fair grade on this one. You can always buy a 66!
Let's try not to get upset.

Coin doesnt look "fake" to me at all. In fact, it is a very nice original and authentic 1909 VDB Lincoln cent. Congrats!!

I kinda gotta disagree with this - please show me a better certified MS65RD 1909 VDB. All have some minor issue keeping them from 66 or 67 - be it spotting, nicks on obverse, diminished color or luster, etc. In the grand scheme of things, this coin is about as good as it gets at the grade level.

From my observation the standards for more “modern” coins like this can looser than they are for older material. What I have in mind are the grades from stuff like State Quarters in slabs. Back when it first started I knew a dealer who was selling slabbed State quarters in MS-65 holders for “dumb money” like $40 or more apiece. I looked at the coins, and I figured I had some pieces of equal quality in my pocket. The quarters had obvious marks on them, and yet they graded MS-65.

Looking at your cent, the grading is consistent with the MS-65 grade. You can compare it with this piece from my collection, which is graded MS-65. Red.

Well, I guess I'm wrong (again)... This was my first attempt at posting pics..."earthquake" image
It's a NGC holder with some kind of damage on the top. Looks like it was opened, I don't know.
    Thanks for all the feedback!

If it makes you feel any better, I think your coin is legit and your holder was just a sloppy heat/sonic seal...and also, based on some usually tough critics around here...you actually have a pretty decent coin for the grade.

For $5-$10, you should just let NGC reslab it for you. And then you'll also be sure you're good to go.

    I agree. And don't reholder it. That's a no-line fattie.

if the "aberration" on the top does not go all the way around the holder, then it hasn't been opened.

If you think it's been opened and resealed, get a cheap NGC slab and try it yourself!

No way you can do that

I disagree with most, its fake and ugly. Will buy if it is priced accordingly.
