My 1st question.....
How do I get rid of the black crud (reverse) without ruining or damaging the coin?

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
Don't wipe it.
one thing you can try is put a toothpick in dip and touch the toothpick to the spot on the coin, then rinse, rinse and rinse again.
<< <i>i say leave it alone >>
...that may be permanent.
A soak in acetone might be wise in case that has some PVC on it but I think most of the "black crud" is nothing and should be left alone (acetone won't change it, it will only help with the PVC if there is any).
That one dot on the rim looks to be the worst thing and I don't think it can be fixed.
MS70 is another product that might work...same rules apply, be darn careful. Good luck!
All of that being said, I think you will end up with a neutralized GRAY SPOT on the coin...luster will be impaired. That black has eaten away at your luster. When people suggest leaving it alone in this case, they have a VERY HIGH CHANCE OF BEING RIGHT! Sell it and buy a problem free example...probably what I would do.
Not really looking for much these days but if I were, it might be a toner.
It's a beautiful, original coin that would be ruined.
<< <i>very nice pictures. Im sure at original size it does not look so bad. Id leave it along. >>
