1893-S $1 MS67 - Blast White w/Mole on Face
It sold for a little more than I thought it would. What do you think? Too High, Too Low, About Right?

<< <i>It's really a very nice piece if lustre and original surfaces are not high priorities, I mean the strike is nearly full and the obv. fields are very clean.
Special emphasis should be put on the word "CLEAN".

<< <i>I studied the coin closely a couple of days ago. The more I looked at it, the more I liked it. Yes, it was better before, but the surfaces are still pristine. And given a few years and a little bit of natural color, the coin could regain much of its former glory. >>
Wouldn't it have to be cracked out to be given the chance to retone? While slabs aren't totally air-tight they will slow down the toning process considerably. I doubt the new owner will crack it out and risk losing the assigned grade and there is no guarantee that any new toning will be attractive. Agree that a little bit of natural toning can help this coin.

Sounds like someone got a bargain.

Is it ever a bargain when you buy a problem coin at 'discount'?
Then again, maybe it starts to tone mottled again.
I thought it sold in the mid to upper $700K's last time around. That was sheet price at the time.
As I said before, whatever this coin lost in value was added to the Vermeulle coin, much to the delight of the owner at that time.

Is it a problem coin if it's in a graded top tier slab?

Yes.
And FWIW, I would not call an MS65 93-S Dollar in an MS67 holder a problem coin. I'd call it a "problem slab".

I don't know, but the auctioneer was giggling with delight as he thanked the high bidder from the podium.

Successful Trades: Swampboy,
<< <i>Turns out the coin was purchased by Mark Salzberg, presumably for NGC. IMHO, this was not only "the right thing to do" but a good value! >>
Do you think that NGC will re-slab it at a lower grade and then re-sell it?

That would be a nice ending to the "problem", if true.

of a potential problem, and the other part sees it as a major conflict of interest. The coin business does have its
moments, doesn't it?
