1893-S $1 MS67 - Blast White w/Mole on Face

It sold for a little more than I thought it would. What do you think? Too High, Too Low, About Right?

Not really looking for much these days but if I were, it might be a toner.

As I wrote on another thread, some of the well-to-do are writing blank checks to fill 'holes' in their "finest known" (quotes intended) registry sets. Caveat emptor and bon apetit. Heritage will send this guy a Christmas card.

The PCGS CAC MS67 sold privately a few years back for over $1M.

Everytime I see a photo of the coin it looks duller than before.

If I recall that's only slightly better than half of what it sold for before.

It's really a very nice piece if lustre and original surfaces are not high priorities, I mean the strike is nearly full and the obv. fields are very clean. image

Special emphasis should be put on the word "CLEAN". image

I studied the coin closely a couple of days ago. The more I looked at it, the more I liked it. Yes, it was better before, but the surfaces are still pristine. And given a few years and a little bit of natural color, the coin could regain much of its former glory.

I enjoyed the undulating rotation videos of the obverse and reverse. Makes Lady Liberty look very amorous.

Very clean but yeah it looks a bit dull. I have seen coins like that in 64 holders.

Wouldn't it have to be cracked out to be given the chance to retone? While slabs aren't totally air-tight they will slow down the toning process considerably. I doubt the new owner will crack it out and risk losing the assigned grade and there is no guarantee that any new toning will be attractive. Agree that a little bit of natural toning can help this coin.

If put in a Wayte Raymond holder for 20 yrs, while sitting in NGC's vault, it could turn almost as nice as before.
Then again, maybe it starts to tone mottled again.

I thought it sold in the mid to upper $700K's last time around. That was sheet price at the time.
As I said before, whatever this coin lost in value was added to the Vermeulle coin, much to the delight of the owner at that time.

Is it a problem coin if it's in a graded top tier slab?

    Yes.

And FWIW, I would not call an MS65 93-S Dollar in an MS67 holder a problem coin. I'd call it a "problem slab".

Sold for about half the list price, so I'd go with "About Right."

I don't know, but the auctioneer was giggling with delight as he thanked the high bidder from the podium.

Turns out the coin was purchased by Mark Salzberg, presumably for NGC. IMHO, this was not only "the right thing to do" but a good value!

So am I to assume by some posters above that this is only a MS 65 coin now that it has been conserved? Looks at least a 66? No

Do you think that NGC will re-slab it at a lower grade and then re-sell it?

That would be a nice ending to the "problem", if true.

If Mark were buying this for his own collection or even NGC, then letting it retone in an album might be a wise thing to do. Then again, maybe it comes out looking weird
or ugly in 10 yrs....then what?

Not sure how I feel about a grading service buying a coin like this. Part of me congratulates them for taking care
of a potential problem, and the other part sees it as a major conflict of interest. The coin business does have its
    moments, doesn't it?
