Poll: which of these two 1912-S halves should I keep for my Dansco?

lordmarcovanlordmarcovan Posts: 43,897 ✭✭✭✭✭
I'm doing a VG-F Barber half collection in a Dansco album. It's been fun picking out pieces with "The Look"- that is, nice original pieces with that greyish or brownish toning and "skin". I try to pay VG money and get as close to Fine as possible.

Today I picked up a nice looking 1912-S. F12 all day long, I'd say (if not F15?) Here 'tis. Let's call it "Coin A".

Here is the one that was already in my album. I didn't have any trouble calling it F12 before. Let's call it "Coin B".

These two are both great coins (at least within my chosen grade range and budget). In hand, they're quite similar. So which should I keep, and which should I sell? The new coin (Coin A) has a maybe little bit more "chatter", but a tiny bit better detail, I think. And I like the color. The existing coin (Coin B) does have fewer marks, still has pretty nice color, and I've been happy with it so far. I've almost got my mind made up, but thought I'd bounce this off y'all, just for fun. It's poll time!

Oh, and speaking of Barbers, I also scooped up this purty little 1914 dime. VF30, I'd say. You?

LordM Due to the pitting on the face of coin A I believe I like coin B better. I am no expert on grading Barbers but B is the more pleasant looking coin to my taste.

Ron- did you vote? 'Cause as of right now we're at two votes for A and none for B.

(I voted for Coin A myself, calling it F12, because that's the direction I've been leaning towards, but my opinion might be swayed by the comments posted here. Thanks for your input.)

They're really very close, wouldn't you say?

Lord M, no I didn't vote because of my lack of grading Barber coinage. but I will vote and give it my best shot.

    Coin A - F 12
    Coin B - VG 10 [ close but not a F grade ]

Dime - VF 30 - at least to me.

    Coin A Fine-12 +
    Coin B Fine 12

Barber dime, VF-30 sharpness, but if the piece is a light as it appears in the photo, it may have been cleaned.

Hmm. One thing to consider is that I do my images on a scanner rather than with a camera, so while they come out with plenty of detail, sometimes the color is a bit off, or there's no luster. (Luster is the Achilles heel of my scanner.) That's another nice thing about collecting these "crustier" coins with some "skin" to them- my scanner does just fine on them. That piece looked fine in hand, but I'll have to give it another look. In any event, for eleven bucks, I don't think it was a bad pickup.

    Thanks, y'all.

Coin A has a clear lead.

It's always nice when one's private line of thought is validated by a poll. My gut instincts on the two may have been right.

Two very nice Barbers! Coin A is my choice also. I give it a solid F-12 and even though coin B is very nice, I like the contrast of coin A which to my eyes is more appealing. I'm sure that coin B would be an upgrade for my set. My 12 S is VG.

Seems like a no-brainer to me. Coin A is much stronger and has more character than coin B. To the people who voted VG-10 for coin A please sell me your coins.image

You can't expect to see luster on a VF, but what concerned me was sort of a pasty look, which sometimes results from using an abrasive like baking soda. If you don’t see a bunch of hairlines on the piece, you are probably okay.

Coin B has better obverse surfaces.
    Coin A has hits.
Coin A has more detail and better color with the black contrast.
But still, I don't think B needed an upgrade in the least.

I think I am with the majority on this one. I like the look of Coin A better.

I voted first, and for the perhaps the first time, I did not take a neutral stance in my own poll. I chose Coin A and graded it F12.

It's pleasing to see that majority opinion has vindicated my original instincts. It doesn't always happen that way. image

I've learned the most accurate way I grade is guess what grade a coin should be and then drop that down a grade and that's probably what the real grade is. image

    BTW, I like Coin A and at 15...which means it's probably a 12.

Y'know, I think there's some truth to that. There's that old maxim about "ownership adds 1.5 points to the grade" (or whatever the number was). That's a little pathetic, but true. I'm sure a psychologist could form some conclusion around that. (In fact, I'm sure some psychologist could have a lot of fun with us coinpeople- or avid collectors of anything.)
