It was. I spent all I could today. Told him to give me a few days and bring back the rest. He has a proof seated, trade and Morgan dollar in his 7070 also. Its just a sick collection.

Wow! "I'd buy that for a dollar!".
Ballsy, and old-timer I bet, to have that all in a 7070 and not plasticized.
I'm not even go to guess at the price of that as it would be out of my range (the 1814 definitely was!)

He ruined some of his Red cents by having them in that album. Well not ruined, but they arent red anymore. He had a 1914-D that was probably a 65RD now its a 64RB or 64BN with some fugly toning.

    Not a proof IMO.

Denticles rounded, strike weak on lettering left obverse. Reverse top wreath leaves mushy with no center vein and it appears to have no noticable wire rim...

My guess is MS66 PCGS, unless they don't like the toning or something else.

Edited to add: MS 66 IF the luster is there. Hard to say from the pic.

Not a proof, but a nice IHC
I like the toning and the look of the surfaces (except for that one area on the reverse...)
I still don't think it was cheap, given the date/look.

Funny, I was looking for marks too and didn't find anything of note. This is a superb example. I would grade it 67+ but I am probably wrong, the "United States" is weak but if you go by "as struck" I say you have one heck of a nice copper there. Congrats.

    WOW!!!

That is a gorgeous example of a really tough type coin in Proof. A piece like that is a type collectors’ dream.

I hope you didn't pay any more than $1000 for it. I grade it MS64, but from the pictures I doubt it will grade at NGC or PCGS and it is certainly is not a proof.

I agree it isnt a proof, but I believe that it will grade no problem. There is nothing wrong with that coin at all.

I agree it isnt a proof

You should change the title and make it more accurate. Please let us know what it grades if/when you send it in.

Good luck. I don't mean to disparage the coin, as I said, I grade it MS64, so I do like it.

Title Fixed. What do you think holds it back from MS65-66? It has outstanding luster, a ultra clean surface with no major marks and certainly nothing in the focal area. Does the weakness in strike hurt the grade?

If copper is original red it should hold up well in an album, unless it was stored under the water heater. I would guess (of course I can't see them, just judging from your description) they were probably dipped long ago. That where that circular album toning comes from.

Could be I am referring to the braided hair half cent and cent. Both are red with brown toning around the edges that looks to have creeped.

    Woops!

I thought he had gotten this piece into a Proof holder already. image

Here's mine, which is an MS-64.

    Rick,

I was wondering about an old dip too, but that toning looks different than what I would expect from retoning on a CN cent.

Always scary to question something that you said when it comes to copper, but wouldn't you expect more pinks and that slightly washed out look with an old dipped coin? The pastels look believable to me.

In my mind the only thing that could keep this from realizing a gem or a superb gem grade is the originality of the luster/surfaces. It's more than clean enough. But if it's been
dipped or had the color enhanced, all bets are off. It's hard to run into real gem raw early copper at the local B&M, or even from local collections/estates.

If it were my coin I'd probably be unhappy with anything less than a 65 coin. But the luster does seem to fade into the obverse peripheral toning. The strike is a bit below average
on the left wreath and corresponding obverse lettering.

I'd be a lot more conerned about the color if it were bright white. Remember these coins were made of 88% copper and only 12% nickel. The copper influence can result in what you see in that picture.

I like it a lot but I too think the surfaces are un- original. If it does grade I agree with Rick - MS64 tops.

I agree. If that was my coin, I would put it in a yellow Kraft envelope and forget about it for 3 - 5 yrs. and see what it looks like then.

The 1857 is a Snow-15 doubled die. It looks MS64 to me. Can't tell if it is original, though. looks nice.

I guess this coin was bagged for "questionable color" by PCGS, according to the "1814 cent" thread (assuming this is the same 1859 cent). Maybe the OP can confirm for the benefit of the forum members. How many would have guessed based upon the original photos? Sure looks like a pretty toned MS64 to me.

Looks whizzed to me. Look at all the circulation marks in the field above the eagle.

According to the other thread, that one was also bagged for "damage or tooling." I would have to guess the area under America was lightly burnished, or else the top of the letters on CENT were tooled.

Whoever put that album together was good at finding coins that looked like gems, but cost a lot less due to hidden problems.

I still like the coin and thought it was fine. Eagle eye thought different and was apparently right. At least on this bite from the grading apple.
