2011 SILVER EAGLES - How many different 'types' are there?

I just did an eBay search for 2011 Silver Eagles (PCGS MS70), and it turned up at least 3, if not more, ( I didn't keep searching ) differently labeled coins. These are the ones that I remember:

1 - PCGS MS70 FIRST STRIKE - 'San Fransisco' strike on label insert - reputed to be a much lower mintage than the West Point.

2 - PCGS MS70 FIRST STRIKE - The regular, good ol' Silver Eagle, West Point strike (I assume, since it's not indicated on label)

3 - PCGS MS70 FIRST STRIKE - '25TH Anniversary' on insert, no indication as to mint facility, so I assume this is also West Point.

Opinions as to the value of these coins, other than one ounce of silver? Any thoughts on longer term value of one 'type' over any of the others? It seems to me that the only difference is the little label inside the slab......but if you were buying some PCGS MS70 Silver Eagles, would you have a prefernce among them?

IMO, buy the coin, not the label. There's no difference among any of those coins.

Yes, I know all about buying the coin - I am among the great liberators of plastic-entombed coins! My question is not which one is best (although I did kind of ask that by questioning future value) - they are all PCGS MS70 Silver Eagles, and the idea of TPGs is that you have confidence in buying the coin 'sight unseen'. But in this case, I see 3 of the same coin, in the same grade, by the same service, offered with a wide range of prices.

Do the 'San Fransisco' labeled coins have an 'S' mintmark somewhere, or is it just on the pcgs label? I would think that the coin would have to have a mintmark. I guess I'll go the US Mint website and see if that sheds any light on this year's silver eagle offerings.

No 'S' mintmark... must be sent in with shipping box unopened (label will verify San Francisco)..... Cheers, RickO

IMO these are crazy (the "San Francisco" minted SAEs)...If there are no identifiying marks on the coins themselves or any varietal in even edge reeding or anything then IMO is a non-entity collectorwise. Clever of the mint to not even have to bother with an S mintmark and still sell MORE SAEs...

There is currently one type of coin. For me, the variations of labels have no value.

Once the San Franciso labeled sealing band is removed from the monster box you would never know the coins inside were minted outside of West Point. If you want to speculate on the San Francisco ASEs, buy a monster box and leave it sealed. The PCGS "S" label will probaly always carry a premium because they have to be submitted in sealed lots of 500 to get the label.

    yeah but why do .........

    2038xxxx 505253 2011 Eagle First Strike $1 MS70 41239 0 ("Struck at San Francisco")

    and

    1923xxxx 505253 2011 Eagle First Strike $1 MS70 41239 0 ("25th Anniversary")

have different labels with the same PCGS coin number (505253), I don't see how they can break down pops or values? I expect the 2011 uncircs (in the fall) will have a different PCGS coin number with a different mint mark.

Because all three are the same coin, only the labels are different. If you were to remove them from the holders you wouldn't be able to tell any difference. The 25th anniversary is just a specialty label that someone paid extra for and the S label is based on the sealed monster box being submitted and not based on an S mintmark. If San Francisco had struck the ASE with a mintmark, it would get its own coin number. With the same coin number there will be a single population published for all three labels.

    OK....

now wrap this around your brain....

There will be a 2011-W mint mark version released directly from the mint this year in "early fall"

So, the San Fran ones do not have a mint mark, nor do the west points, but the mint's west points will, but they will look just like the san fran and the west points without a mint mark but they will have a mint mark: W. No word if they will mint an "S" uncirculated version. Maybe we should ask just to mess with them. image

Buy the S mint pcgs 70's, the 69's will never be able to be cracked out and re-submitted for a higher gradeimageimage----------------BigE
