I said: I would be cheating you (not as creative as some of the responses above but that is what I said).
I then went on to explain how I was currently selling common silver dollars for almost $30 each. We had a relatively long conversation about how the value of silver and gold (she also has gold coins and specifically mentioned $20 gold coins) has risen sharply making even common silver and gold coins have significant value over their face value. I also explained that certain dates and/or mintmarks could make some of her coins worth far more than melt value. She also told me that a lot of the coins are stored in shoe boxes and while it is probably too late at this point, I talked to her about how the shoe boxes could possibly be damaging some of her coins and if she wasn't going to liquidate the coins soon, she might look to see if she had coins that should be stored differently.
I did not press her to look at her coins. She asked me to look at her coins early in our conversation and I offered to look at her coins at that time and didn't bring it up again. Whether or not I actually get to see the coins, I feel good that she at least has a better understanding of the value of the coins her mother left her and will not dispose of them for 10 cents on the dollar.
