I went to a local antique auction tonight to check out their coins. Turned out to be pure cr*p, with most of the value in junk silver. Not only could I not bring myself to walk away from it, but I figured every lot, sat through the sale, bought about half of the coins, and even bought the large sack of more than 2000 unsorted nickels that I promised myself not to buy. And tonight, I will not go to sleep until I'm finished sorting it all. I am a very sick man.

I read a study yesterday that said a good percentage of auction buyers pay more for a gift certificate than it's value. These are ebay buyers, so it figures.

They weren't all less than melt, but I should make at least a small profit on almost everything.

BTW, I just finished sorting my nickels. There were close to 300 WTNs in there, and close to 1000 (mostly dated) Buffaloes. Since I only paid $350 for that lot, I guess it was actually worth the effort! I mean, in a therapeutic sort of way, of course.

I assume it stands for "war-time nickel" or something similar. You know, the ones with some infinitesimal amount of silver in them.

Reminds me of a local antique auction I went to about 2 yrs ago where they had a large grouping of a hundred or more XF-MS62 gold coins which one might have thought would go begging among hundreds of lots of antiques. I spent about 6 hours total between driving down, assessing every coin, placing about $30,000 in bids, and ended up with zilch. Lesson to self, don't do that again.
