1939 Proof Nickle I paid a lot for,.. UPDATE COIN RECEIVED 6/20

Coin FinderCoin Finder Posts: 7,764 ✭✭✭✭✭
No Picture needed:

No color except a very small patch of blue under the word "TRUST"
Light cam very light not anything like the photo Obverse Reverse NO Cam
Steps are Not full and it is not a rev of 40

Not much haze really some light haze on both sides

So I did very badly.

I am thinking of returning because item was not as described.

I liked the contrast and colors, anyone know if this could be a CAM?

The holder is a PCGS 5 do not know if they were designating cams on Nickles back then unless you asked them to.
Thanks

Paid to much but I liked it!

Looks nice, no idea on the cam, but I think the colors are juiced.

There's no way you can tell if that coin is CAM based on those pics. Also, there may be spots just to the right of Jefferson's ponytail as well as some reverse haze. But don't worry about paying to much. If you ultimately like the coin, you did well.

Ya it is the lowest mintage proof for the Jefferson nickle series I think. I saw the haze etc....

I'll admit I don't recall seeing OGH's for proofs coming up on eBay very often. Green slabs look great with nickel coins in my opinion.

If the nickel in had looks like it appears in the picture, you may have picked up something special. I think the holder dates to a time before out host started giving out Cameo designations. If so, and if the coin has unblemished [or minimally blemished]mirrored fields and frosted devices on both sides of the coin, you may find on a regrade you hit the jackpot and receive a CAM or even a DCAM designation.

Please post a picture of the coin when you receive it.

you should be more hopeful that it is a R.40 coin which is probably more likely than a mis-designated CAM. i'm relatively certain this is a PCGS 5 Holder which was being used during the "sketchy" time period when PCGS began designating CAM/DCAM on all coins, so it's possible that they missed it but not probable. my interpretation of the picture is a coin with hazed mirrors which show the color at the right angle, an angle which also tends to depict contrast which isn't present near the degree it appears in the picture.

OH you mean a rev of 1940...what are the diagnostics?

answering that is really going to require pictures -- but it's straight vs. wavy steps. you want straight ones.

The colors are certainly juiced, but the coin appears to show light cameo, which is a good diagnostic for R40. I'd planned to roll the dice on this one and certainly would have if not for some problems I have having right now. Anyhow, I think there is a pretty good shot the OP might have picked an R40. someone else here picked one a few months ago in a rattler so it does happen.

Please let us know when you get it.

Pics look juiced to me... doubt its cameo or blue. Creative lighting. Hope I am wrong and look forward to seeing images once you have it in hand.

Old slab in Proof66, I don't think ya did bad for the 39,
but you'll have to wait till it's in hand, a few weeks back
in Long Beach, A 39 Proof was on my list and of the 9 or
10 pieces I ran across in 64 to 66 in NGC & PCGS slabs
I recall the cheapest being about $150.00 and up, and
all overpriced, anyhow it's still on the list.

the easiest way for me to tell from a photograph which isn't distinct is from the very top step. on the R.38 it is approximately the same as the lower steps, with the R.40 it is noticeably "thicker" than the lower steps. these pictures should clear things up.

Look very closely at the frost. If it "bleeds" into the fields, I'd be suspect. Also, if the frost doesn't look like the "normal" frost you see on cameo nickels from the '50's - be suspect. A third clue is whether there is significant blue haze that doesn't seem normal.

Bottom line, it it doesn't look "right" , send it back.

The good news is that the majority of the artificially frosted cameos were done later than when this coin was slabbed. This would be the first artificially frosted coin I have encountered in an OGH holder. (But that doesn't mean they don't exist).

How do you tell if they are artificially frosted?

check this listing for a coin i'm fairly sure has been artificially frosted (AF) and got by PCGS only to turn bad in the holder at a later time. it's hard to tell, but it has the "look" that was mentioned. be sure to look at the large pictures and i'm sure you'll agree.

I think there's contrast on the obverse, but the reverse looks to be fully brilliant. There may be some contrast there, but not much.

Also, I do believe this was taken on a scanner.

Lastly, during this period of PCGS slabs, they were designating cameos, not sure if you had to ask, but they didn't start designating cameos on pre 1950 until much later regardless whether you asked or not.

while PCGS was issuing this slab(sometime in 1995 through Oct of 1998) they made the change and were routinely assigning CAM/DCAM to all coins, so there will be PCGS 5 slabs which are CAM/DCAM which aren't noted as such. i don't really think this is one of them.

Yep that one is highly suspicious. How do I know?
I returned a 1938 Proof cent in PCGS PR65 cameo to PCGS under the grade guarantee back in 2004. The coin was purchased in the 8/02 Superior ANA auction and looked fine when I put it away. PCGS made me whole as the coin was AF. The cert on that coin was 21167739. I'd be highly suspect of the coin in question - 21167712 - too close for my comfort.

Ahhhhhh...if this is a 5th generation slab as claimed and if this suspect Jeffferson proof was enhanced with Artificial Frost, don't you think it would have changed to where it is noticeable to the naked eye by now?

I was going to say if the reverse is not frosted where most of these early dates fail the cam desig. why would anyone waste their time AF-ing just the obverse but now that you have mentioned the similarities in the slab numbers, the OP is likely now suspect as well.

In my 20+ years seraching, I have seen only one deep cameo two sided frosted 1939 Jeff proof. The obverse frosted example I have came from a Heritage auction PR66 Reverse of 1940 2003 $900 and they said, "This is a deeply mirrored example that has six full steps. Light mint frost can be seen on the devices but not quite enough to warrant a cameo designation".
The fields were more satin than deeply mirrored! The obverse was frosted, the reverse was not. Needless to say, I was very disappointed.

After you're refunded, make note with the seller it's a $185 coin and the last 3 Heritage sales averaged around $130. But the seller's coin went to $250?? Let him know the toning was marginal and not anything close to what he had pictured, the reason for the spirited bids. I would have been irate but would have sent an email before bidding. Went through this not too long ago over a juiced picture.
