Is PCGS going to certify the San Fransisco minted American Silver Eagles?

I believe it's because the Mint doesn't like to create key date coins any more, similar to how they withheld use of the W mintmark for circulation coins.

I like the idea of the S Mint ASE, but out of the holder you can't tell it apart from the P.

As said earlier the mint doesn't want to create key date coins ...

Interesting...I had no idea that the Westpoint facility produced "circulating" coins. I was under the impressing that all they do is bullion related coins.

Probably for the same reason that West Point doesn't use a mint mark on the bullion they crank out.

I guess I'm not surprised that the top two are labeling these. On the plus side, it brings them up to speed with SGS who has been labeling SAE's as "No W Mintmark" for years.

Whatever.

It's plausible that a number of the W minted coins have a low mintage (<500,000) which could create a key date, but by withholding the mintmark, collectors either don't realize they exist or cannot identify them even if they know about their existence. The result is that the Mint can use branch mints to assist in production without creating key date coins which could disrupt demand for their premium collector products. Collecting moderns would be more interesting if the Mint would just used mint marks and created key dates when needed.

It could be interesting to make a FOIA request for the West Point circulation mintage figures to see how many key dates there might have been.
