Buyer beware... the above collectibles have been known to have been doctored. If a charge appears on your credit card similar to: Plastic Surgeon, you may want to send your collectible to PCGS to see if they still have their original skin and haven't been tooled or altered!

company of NGC. It was so nice before they came along too. The comic hobby was
not influenced until much later compared to coins.
now people fuss about .2 differences in grade and the plastic the comic is in.
just as subjective and doctoring is just as big an issue as before.
i will give coins one thing though.. the maturity level compared to comic book collectors
is 1000 times better overall. If you thought this place was somehow bad just go
ATS to the comic forum there. oi!

Yes, all of them.
<< <i>I think stamp grading is much tougher and def. more illogical than coins gradig , for example, a cancelled stamp with better centering can be worth more than a mint never hinged with poor centering.? The diff. betweem a $10 and $10000 stamp can be really scarry small.
Postal History (covers, used stamps, etc.) is big in the Stamp Collecting Community. Coin Collectors were always taught to believe that unused (uncirculated, NO history) coins are better than used (coins WITH history) coins.
Hoard the keys.

The problems we face with undisclosed alterations and flat-out fakes in numismatics carry over to other types of collectibles too.

Sure.
I actually want one of these.
When you look at action figures, comics, sports cards, coins, paper money, fine art, antiques etc... a minor difference in grade can mean an enormous percentage difference in price. Collectors generally tend to pursue the scarcest items in any given class. Since condition is typically a major factor in separating like items from each other, with the higher condition pieces being the scarcest, it naturally follows that most hobbies are sensitive to even slight differences in condition. Is it silly? Sure. Is it the reality of collecting? Absolutely
agreed, and this is probably and understatement
its amazing when you watch antiq road show and a 20K painting "can be easily repaired"
I think coins are very finite in orignality / grading, more so that others collectables, fixed coins dont work

Coins are not displayed like paintings. This might be why repairing them (and other items) is OK. No one wants a ragged painting on the wall.

Thanks for the link. I guess if there's money to be made someone is going to try and make it.
