May 8, 2011: OLD GOLD!!!

pcgs69pcgs69 Posts: 4,406 ✭✭✭✭
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My first gold in over a year, and this kind of gold was tops on my want list! I had wanted a gold ring where the karat marking is raised, which generally indicates it's an older ring - in other words, I wanted old gold!

An friend told me about an old cellar hole near his house and that I should check it out. I went over today and he showed it to me. But between the bugs, trees, ticks, sticker bushes and large iron, I was done after 15 minutes. Did manage a wheat cent somehow.

He told me I could detect the house across the street, which I have done in the past. Figured it was worth another shot even though I barely found a clad dime previously. After 5 minutes I got a pull tab signal. Not thinking anything out of the ordinary, I dug a plug. It wasn't in there, so I took a couple more shovel fulls and something gold pops out of the hole. What the heck??? It can't be. It was! Talk about an adrenaline rush. Despite the desire to clean it then and there, I left the dirt inside. The end result - 3.7 grams of old 14k gold! My guess is it dates sometime around 1890-1920.

HH all!

(probaby overkill on the pics, but I'm excited!!!!!)

Wow! Very nice find! That piece is worth more as an antique than it's gold content. -Dan

You did well. I thought that I was doing good when I found a sterling ring yesterday.

Congratulations image I think something to take away from this is something the OP pointed out in the first post , " I got a pull tab signal "
I honestly believe right there is the #1 reason so few people find gold. The discrimination dial is not your friend.

Correct about the signal. When you get a signal you really don't know what you have until your find comes out of the ground.

Fantastic find! Does it fit you? I'd be tempted to make a necklace charm out of it.

No, wait, I'd lose it, only to have someone find it again in 100 years. image

It actually does fit on my left hand ring finger, but I don't want those single ladies to think I'm taken, so I'm putting it away for now!

Going back to some earlier posts. I was actually wondering if gold would ever be found again, but as others said, you don't know what it is until it's out of the ground, so it doesn't hurt to dig everything. At the very least, you clean the ground a bit and get some exercise.

WOW, the find of a career imho. I really need to blow the dust off of my Tesoro and Bounty Hunter MDs and get out there again.
