Im looking at a coin right now and asking that question. ( actually a roll of 1957 skull cracked wheats). Dont know why i bought them. I see dealers have them loose in the cases for 2.00 per coin but i scratch my head why i bought a roll at 5.00 for 50 of them. Why did i buy them? Is there even a market for skull cracks? and the biggest question who thought this term up , someone with tons of them and said if i give it a clever name maybe i can get rid of my stack of them?

The box of twenty idea sounds more & more appealing to me lately but I still find a lot of enjoyment out of my widgets when I bust them out to take a closer look and to try & decide what to sell off...

Oh yeah, this is par for the course. Hopefully, we all also have coins we look at and think, "Yeah, nice score!" I'm happy to report a lot of those in the past four or five years.

I think most of us do have those kinda coins in our collections.

I agree that I think we also have the other coins that we look at and say "I`m glad I bought that Baby" image

Now and then I ask myself, "Why did I buy that?" but not very often. More often I look at what I have thank goodness that I have it. Coin collecting has really improved my quality and outlook on life, and that is what a hobby should be all about.

Although I've never been divorced, I can understand that thought. When I think back to some of the many women I dated before I got married, I think God that I did not end up with some them. A few of them were really gorgeous, but sometimes you libido defeats your common sense. Had I married a couple of them, THEY would have had the coin collection, not I.

Coin collecting fashions change. What are we doing right now that will fall out of fashion in the next 50 years?

I have seen a few from back in high school many years later, or connected through farcebook and damned - I am glad nothing went further! They blew up like balloons, aged beyond where they should have and well - are not very well preserved specimens! In fact they are AT, altered surfaces and doubtful authenticity.

Oh that is a whole topic in of in it's own. And I can see that the mods would have a field day with NARUs etc.

I believe this question was asked from a collectors POV, but here is my experience from a slightly different perspective...

Being a fledgling vest pocket dealer of sorts, I spend between $15k and $40k (depending on the size/quality of the bourse) at every show I attend. Given a two to three day stay at a show (minimum 1 day pre-show hotel buying) I generally have at least one semi-leisurely day left over on which I can review my purchases in the relaxed atmosphere of my hotel room and without distractions.

Having done this for a few years now I still, *WITHOUT FAIL*, find no less than 1 and no more than 2 coins which upon further review I ask myself the following question: "What the !@#< were you thinking?!"

I've simply come to terms with these momentary lapses in sanity, diligence, and/or concentration. Because, when all purchases are taken as a whole, the numbers always work in my favor.

I have two tiers in my collecting,,,one is the BIG collections, and I will do whatever it takes to get something I want for those, but those purchases are well thought out.

The second collection, thats the cheap but interesting stuff that I come across at a show, or the coin club auction.

There is a cup with about 75 or so liberty nickels in it.....still cannot figure out why I bought them.

Yes, yes I do. But I'm new at this so I am working on trying to minimize this.

i almost feel that way about my gold 2.5s . i bought them at 300-400 an oz. and now the coin prices never went up but basically the gold melt on the coins rose with the 1350 tag to the price of what i paid for the coins ( on the numismatic level). kinda leaves me with a question of was it worth it. i think the most any coin went up was 50.00.

The problem for me is I do not have to ask myself why...I know why I bought the items...all the wrong reasons! image

I have some coins in series that I no longer think about. Many times I considered sending them off to Heritage auctions, but have not. Last time I sold off a dozen or so coins, I used the money to by one really nice Capped Bust Half Dollar. I think about that CBH often.

Maybe my goal should be a box of 200 PCGS. Sure would be easier. Not a typo.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.
