FINAL UPDATE: Charmy's SANTA CLARA Show Report (w/photos)!

ThePennyLadyThePennyLady Posts: 4,439 ✭✭✭✭✭
I left Thursday morning and drove the 6 hours to the show, which opened to dealers yesterday at noon, though I neglected to notice they had changed the time from 2:00 pm as it had been in previous years so I got there around 3:00 pm due to some accidents in the L.A. area. It was a nice relaxing set up day, opened up a nice bottle of wine, did some shopping around, then had a wonderful dinner and a great bottle of 2003 Zinfandel at the Italian restaurant in the Hyatt. Here's what the restaurant looked like before it got crowded - it's very trendy with a sparse but delicious menu.

image

I was pretty tired so i just went back to my room and watched a movie (Conviction with Hillary Swank).

This morning took a while for the show to get going, it seemed like the public sort of meandered in but soon the floor began to have the usual show buzz.

Wei took this photo because he said I should have at least ONE photo that wasn't blurry!
image

image

Several forum members stopped by and chatted - Obiwan, 19Lyds, Wei to name a few. I got this photo of Lance/lkeigwin at the snack bar.

image

Here are more photos I took today around the show...

More usual suspects...

As mentioned on another thread, the CBS news crew was here at the show filming. Here is a shot of their equipment (couldn't find the crew, they must ave gone out for lunch)

And here is the "Pirate's Cove" where all the kids will gather on Saturday for the treasure hunt

Tonight a few other dealers and I are headed to Bay 101 for some limit poker - we'll see how that goes!

These are some of those very old coin books that I recently acquired and have gotten some interest. The smallr books are Wayte Ramond and the tall album book is Meghrig & Sons and is very hard to find.

I stopped by the Santa Clara show today, as I have done for 7-8 years now.

It continues to be much less attended by dealers and the public than it was 4+ years ago. Still a great place to spend an afternoon.

For the past couple of years I attend Santa Clara more for the opportunity to see people [dealers and collectors] I have met over the years and simply spend time with them. Looking at coins, buying and selling have become less of a focus.

Arrived at about 12:30 p.m. Got a late start this morning. I had spoken with Skyman on the way to the show and we decided to meet at the food tables at 12:30 p.m. Met Skyman, Crazyhoundog and Ikeigwin at the food tables. Spent quite abit of time there talking and doing show and tell. I mostly looked. As I had hoped, Crazyhoundog stampeded my with some of his toned buffalos. Amazing coins. In hand his toned buffalos are even more beautiful than the pictures of them that he posts to the forums. Skyman showed off the USSR Space Program banner he posted a few days ago that has the signature of Russian cosmonauts on it, including Yuri Gagarin. Really a neat item of space memoribilia [I wonder what the 1950's and 1960's Politboro members would think of Cold War ear USSR space items being sold at auction in the "West" for big bucks????]. Skyman also brought his 1938 Cameo proof Walker and I was able to look at it and drool once again.

I showed Skyman a 1952 Cameo proof quarter I cherrypicked in Colorado in February [it was in a Capital Holder and I removed the cameo quarter and replaced it with a brilliant quarter]. I also showed a splint planchet Jefferson nickel that I have [my most dramatic error coin].

Later I strolled through the bourse, stopping to talk to various dealers and collectors along the way. I sold the 1952 proof set I had picked up in Colorado.

I stopped by to say hello to Charmy. We spoke, I had wanted to pick up a nicely toned raw MS 1912 P Lincoln for my Lincoln Dansco, but unfortunately she did not have one that has the same eye appeal and nice toning that are present on other early toned MS Lincolns that she has sold me (I have to match the quality of the prior coins that she sold me when I buy new ones from her; thats a pretty good concept for her to use on her customers but she then has the burden of finding suitable coins to feed to her customers).

I forgot to tell Charmy that Andy of Angel Dee's suggested that I tell her to take a few minutes and stroll over to his display cases to see his toned Buffalo nickel collection. Charmy likes toned copper, but I suspect that if she looks at Andy's buffalos, she might start liking toned nickels. Crazyhoundog told me to stop by to see Andy and look at his herd. I did. All I can say is image. What an amazing collection he has. I will also suggest to Charmy that she stop by to see Andy's herd. I also showed Andy my raw Cameo proof and SMS sets from 1950-1967. He liked the look of the sets from the 1950's.

I ran into Skyman a little later in the show at Todd's table and at Andy's table. I said hello to Todd but did not have him photograph any coins. Skyman said he had success in selling off a Battlecreek Morgan or two that he brought with him to the show, but that a couple of coins he had been interested in and wanted to buy had mysteriously disappeared. He also was looking at two 1938 Cameo cents in Andy's case [a 66RD and a 65RD]. Skyman was looking at them and thinking about how nice one would look as a bookend to his half. I acted as cheerleader and encouraged him to buy one of the cents [hey its not my money] and then try to find a cameo nickel, dime and quarter to finish off the set.

I snooped a little and found a 1965 SMS set with a possible DCAM nickel in it. I asked the dealer how much for the set. He took a long time and told me $14.00. I was expecting $6.00 or $7.00. I passed, and the dealer got upset. He took the set back and said that his asking price was right around melt for the Kennedy half. Even at a spot price of $42+ for silver, I do not think melt on a 40% 1965 half is much more than $5.00. So either my math abilities are way off, or the dealer's math abilities are way off.

Later I found at the MacIntosh table a 1966 SMS set with a gorgeous CAM, possibly DCAM SMS half. So I bought it for $8.00 [I knew that $14.00 for a 1965 SMS set was way too high]. I also stopped at another table and saw a 1962 proof set in an unusal Capital Holder. The holder is square, is black, has "1962 Proof Set" embossed in gold lettering on the black inner plastic layer and also has a brown horseshoe embossed on the black inner plastic layer. The five coins are located on the inside of the horseshoe. A cool "Western Motif". The best thing is that the 1962 half is a black and white DCAM and the 1962 quarter is a Cameo.

Left the show at about 4:30 p.m. and headed home. Will be comparing the 1966 SMS half and the 1962 half and quarter I picked up today with my best examples of these coins to see if any of the new acquisitions will upgrade my sets.

All in all a nice way to spend an afternoon. Thanks to all who spent a little time with me today.

It's been great seeing so many of you here at the show. As for the show itself, I can say for myself it has been very strong and busy. Late this afternoon I was able to slow down a bit but Thursday and Friday both had a bit of a buzz going on.

Bay101 was fun tonight too as we left with more then we started with rumor has it! image

Hope to see more of you tomorrow at 346, right next to Todd's black photo booth shroud. image

On the 40% Kennedy, you were right. FWIW, at $42/oz a single 40% Kennedy contains 0.14792 ASW or $6.21. The dealer's math was way off or maybe he was confusing it with 90%, which would be $15.19. Nice report, both you and Charmy.

I'm thinking of going back today... ride the bike down this time, though. Yesterday's traffic was a PITA until I got north of 580, but it was still a 2 hour drive home for what normally would be 90 minutes or so...

I think Todd should image my coins AND help me pack AND be VERY VERY NICE to me - if he wants me to pay my bill! image

Pakasmom, yes, I do like girly things! As a matter of fact, Gene Bruder's wife is selling these beautiful crystal beaded lanyards so the wives and women dealers can hang their badges and loupes on something pretty rather than a standard (usually bulky looking) show lanyard. I bought two black and gold ones that are just like jewelry and I love them!

    image

Littlebear, Todd may have been out of striking distance, but just wait til the next show we set up together at when GNR and ACDC start getting louder and louder on my iPod! image

Wei, I don't think it's as much my Blackberry camera that takes bad pictures as much as the fact that I am a horrible photographer!

Ricko, yesterday we had a very nice 2008 Bogle cab and on Thursday we had a tasty 2008 La Creme Pinot. Later today, I will open a Foggy Valley Pinot which I haven't tried yet but heard it was very good. Last night, I had a Bay 101 house cab while playing cards, however, it was only tolerable.

By the way, last night at the casino me qnd the two other dealers I went with all won $$ at the 6-12 hold-um game. We had a lot of fun and plan to go back tonight and play some more (this time with THEIR money)!

Yesterday the show gradually filled up, then died down by mid-afternoon. Sales were slow, but i did pick up a few coins for inventory but nothing really special. I found these cool penny iigsaw puzzles from a guy and have been selling a few of them. I think they're pretty cool and people find them very challenging.
    image

Also, Obiwan, who told me he hasn't yet appeared on my reports, let me take his photo!
    image

Today, I finally picked up a beautiful coin for my own collection - it's a stunningly toned Pop 1 1956 Lincoln, PCGS MS67 RB. Lance brought it by to show me, and I asked him if it was for sale. He said it was, and was happy to see it go to a good home. Here are some photos (that don't do the coin any justice) that I took with my camera phone - of course, I'll have Todd photograph it and post those later.
    image
    image

I also just got on consignment a beautiful VF-AU Indian cent set - wow! They're all really pretty pieces! I'll have to get photos of that too! in the meantime, here are some of my not-so-good photos of this set.
    image
    image
    image

This same customer also gave me as a gift a beautiful brand new Capital Plastics holder for Indian cents!
    image

And yet another customer just now gave me this really pretty stained glass box with some yummy candy (that I'm trying to stay far away from!). Last year, he gave me a really pretty tray made out of a melted wine bottle.

I got to meet Mr Organic and he was very cordial. Did some no-hassle business.

Saw Todd, Roger, Charmy, Andy, etc.

Did some business with Certified Assets (they actually had some stuff up my alley) and sold them a coin.

It was then on to Red Lobster and the girl was happy image

Well, it's a very quiet Sunday morning, the public is very sparse, so i'll be packing up as soon as I post this. Yesterday was decent, but overall sales were still slow. I did see Angel Dee's toned Buffalo nickels, and they are quite pretty. He should do quite well selling them.

The best part about this show actually has been seeing some of my regular customers whom I only see a couple times a year, as well as all the forum members who stop by. And even though I really like the Santa Clara show and enjoy coming up to this area, as a result of this show slowing down, I will definitely be attending the Baltimore show in November instead of this one (since they are on the exact same dates this year).

So, last night after the show, Glen/PonyExpress and I headed back to Bay 101 for some more poker. Another dealer Greg also met us there. Here's the front of the casino and the entrance to the poker room (I had to be slick about taking pictures in there since they don't usually allow people to take photos.

    image
    image
    image

Here's Glen and Greg who ended up sitting on either side of me.
    image
    image

So, about a couple hours into our 6-12 game, I was dealt pocket 7's and the flop came 10-7-7. My heart is beating a mile a minute, but of course I slow play my hand and checked. Another guy bets, so I just call, and a couple people drop out. Another 10 comes on the turn, so the guy bets again, and I raise, he calls. Then comes a J I think (can't really remember the last card). The guy bets, I raise, he re-raises, I re-raise and this kept going about 6-7 times. The pot was at least $450, when the other guy was finally all-in. I'm sure you can guess what he had! Yep, pocket 10's! image

My heart starts beating even faster and I got even more excited because I think I just won the bad beat jackpot! Usually, if Aces full of 10's or better gets beat, everyone at the table splits a big jackpot, and the one with the losing hand gets the biggest percentage. I was whooping and hooting with my hands pumping in the air.... when I was quickly told there was no bad beat jackpot at this casino!!! UGGGGGGHH! I couldn't believe it! WOW! What a letdown. Oh well, easy come, easy go. But at least by the time I left, the guy who won ended up losing most of his chips, while I still had a few trays full of chips, so that was my only consolation to such a horrible bad beat!

    image
    image
    image

So now I begin the arduous task of packing up, loading, and driving that long drive home. Since I'm taking a few weeks off, I won't be doing Central States, so I'll have to look forward to reading someone else's show report!

Here are a couple of pix of Charmy's pop 1/0 '56 67RB. They're a bit old and can be improved but you get the idea.

MS67RB's are very scarce, fewer than 20 across the entire Lincoln series IIRC, and probably extinct, as PCGS seems disinclined to award more. I figured it was more of a Charmy-coin than one for my set so we agreed on a price about 85% of what I originally paid. It's in a better home now.

Todd will get the coin to do some updated photos. They'll be great, no doubt.
    Lance.

Lance, thanks for posting your photos - they look great. I did have Todd photograph it too, so I'll post those whenever he gets around to sending them to me! image

I just got home, am very tired, and look forward to sleeping again in my own bed with my cuddly hubby and soft feisty kitty! All in all it was a mediocre show for me both sales-wise and purchasing new coins. It's kind of funny how the Tukwila show last weekend was a blockbuster, but this show was kind of the opposite for me - however, I did hear the buying and selling bullion was extremely active! I did give Todd a bunch of business photographing more of my inventory coins, so that is always productive - not to mention I won quite a bit at the casinos and had fun doing it!

But as Wei likes to tease me, if the best part of a show is the after hours events, then it probably wasn't a very good show. In this case, that is true, but I still enjoyed all the other aspects of being at the show - the people, the food, the wine, and the poker!

So Central States is just around the corner, I hope someone will post a good report with some great photos and let me know what I'm missing!

I did pretty good at this show. Charmy was right, it could have been better attended, but I blew off Friday and spend most of the day just looking around, enjoying the views, and since it was light, nearly every dealer had time to chat with me, discuss my interests and needs, and though I did make one good buy, and put another coin in lay-away, I chose to come back Saturday - rode the bike down - and brought some of the silver I had laying around.

Some of you may recall I picked up a sizeable hoard last November from a client, and sold some of it in Sacramento for some nice buys there (picked up some two quarter eagles and a half for the type set). Sold a bit more in Santa Clara on saturday, and that alone paid for the hoard I bought. I continued to shop, picked up a couple nice pieces, but couldn't find more to complete the Type Set.

I'm looking forward to the next show - Charmy said come to Long Beach - so I'm considering it, since my confidence level has grown at these shows, and I'm getting to know some of the dealers now...

All told, I was pretty happy wioth my buys this show, was the first time I went more than one day... does it seem like I'm getting hooked?

Maybe it was Charmy's hospitality!! Gracias para las bebidas! image
