Overcrowded.

I have been a collector of coins for a very long time. Let's say 40+ years. I have complete Unc sets of what is known as "modern" crap on this forum. Jeffersons, Roosevelts, Washington's, Franklin and Kennedy's halves, Ikes, Presidentials, Sacs, Lincolns, SAE's, SH and ATB quarters, all are very nice hand picked uncirculated items in Dansco Albums. I also have a respectable Registry Set of Washingtons (currentlt 17th), 18 PCGS boxes of certified Washington's, Walkers, SLQ's, and finally some gold raw and certified..... Whew! Do I need to unload some of the modern stuff and get "focused?"

...and does anyone else have this problem?

BTW this stuff is all safely tucked away at my employer's........image

  • As many others have said over time "Collect what you like". Just because some here have holes burning in their pocket from money (yes, I am jealous image ) doesn't mean you have to collect what they collect. If you like modern stuff, keep doing what your doing. Maybe what you need is to collect from a different angle with your current material? Varieties, upgrades, etc?

    It's up to you.

If it was me, I would sell any duplicates you have and use the proceeds to buy a nice certified type coin (or a few) in a series earlier than what you have collected so far (perhaps a Seated coin), or maybe a nice classic commemorative (or a few). If the bug bites, you can then work backwards.

Collect what you like...but at the same time, since you asked...If I were you, I might want to make sure that my future focus is on things that are just a little less likely to lose me money.

Go on a Key Hoarding Spree for the next 10 years or so? That would get you involved in a few different series since you clearly like a variety of things.

    My 2 Cents.

Seems as though you've got quantity as well as quality - nothing wrong with having both. image

It all depends on two items, do you like all that modern crap, and is it costly to maintain the sets? If you're in the banking business, and you get all the coins at face value, then it's fine to keep collecting them as long as you like them. It's the people who pay above face and pay for slabbing that I don't understand (just look at the ebay sell prices of PCGS slabbed MS 66/67 State Quarters).

how often and for how long do you look at each of those coins? I'll wager somewhere between "never" and "passing glance" for most of them.

are there any that you sit and study for many minutes per coin, all the while thinking, "wow, this coin is very interesting"?

I sold the Dansco full of Jeffersons that I put together in childhood. I enjoyed this album, but, didn't feel like a serious collector until I got rid of it. I've never regretted selling it.

I collected the modern material when I was kid. I completed a set of Lincoln cents, Jefferson nickels, Roosevelt dimes and Franklin half dollars. All of them except the Roosevelt dimes and the Franklin half dollar were circulated sets.

When I went to sell or trade the BU Franklin set set, the dealers to whom I offered them, declared them to be "bottom of the roll crap." Of course when I was buying them, they were all "Choice Uncirculated." For a $300 investment I got back about $125. That soured me on "modern crap," and I've looked back. I also lost a bundle on the set if Indian cents I put together as a kid. That soured me on circulated sets of coins.

Since then it's been type coins in the best grades I could afford, and I've done quite well both from my enjoyment of the hobby and financially.

I say enjoy the hobby. If you like your modern sets, keep them. If you don't, trade up. But I'll tell you one thing. If you your collection is mostly made of "stuff" and not something that is going grab people's attention, the dealers won't pay squat for it. The trouble with sets that I found as a dealer is that you will sell the key coins pretty fast, but the common dates will sit. That's the trouble with common dates. I enjoy collecting them, but they are not easy in sell in the current market which over emphasizes key dates.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I'd sell it (excluding the bullion items) "at the market" [and give yourself six months to do it (read 'ebay')] and buy until I was in half in liquid low margin bullion mostly silver and half into a set of commems in 65 (or something else you would enjoy collecting more in line with traditional 'numismatic investment coins', in the highest grade you can afford - so you don't blow the money on something 'not smart' like a 'like new' SL500).

You sound like a guy who enjoys buying stuff (nothing wrong with that), now you just need to find out how much fun selling it is.

You are right there Anaconda......... I think I have bid on some of your items in the past on the bay.... a particularly nice SLQ comes to mind that was exceptionally nicely toned in a PCGS holder!

According to the March 2011 issue of COINage magazine, in the Whats Hot, Whats Not article....Id say everything you have listed is also listed in the Not Hot section of the article. Sorry.

Bot you see your thoughts regarding these pieces are shared by many collectors.
  • Attempts to predict what will gain future value are not always reliable. Moderns are relatively cheap and have already taken a lot of beating recently. You could sell them off and buy silver bullion; you'll either double vqlue in the next year or hate yourself in the morning when the market flip-flops in favor of moderns again. To para-phrase the great Zephim Cochrine, don't build an investment collection; just build a collection, and let history decide.
