I shipped 1 oz gold coins instead of 1 oz silver coins. Think I'll ever see those again?

jessewvujessewvu Posts: 5,065 ✭✭✭✭✭
Long story, short outcome. I put two 1 oz gold coins into a PCGS box full of 2010 Proof ASE's graded by PCGS because I needed to sell them to help pay some taxes and pay off some credit cards. I somehow shipped the two gold coins out to eBay buyers over the past two months who purchased the 2010 ASE's. One was a 2006 20th Ann MS70 in PCGS plastic. The other was a 2006 20th Ann MS69 First Strike. I sent an email out to everyone that purchased them from me since December of 2010, with a reward of $250. Think I'll ever see them again? I seriously doubt it. image

It's totally out of character of me to do that as I inspect everything I ship out, but selling the ATB coins for friends and family along with another large portion of my personal collection caused a bit of a frenzy. It'll take me a while to get over this mistake.

The only good thing is they are in my PCGS registry set, so if the buyer is dumb enough to not crack them out and resells them, and the buyer just happens to try to put them into a registry set, I should get an email from PCGS asking me to remove it from my set.

I hope they turn up one way or the other for you.

Are you sure you did not misplace them in your house or SDB?

Nope, I've looked everywhere in my basement. The one unknown is my two year old son, but he's never grabbed anything off my desk except a piece of candy and a few Kennedy half dollars he put in the shredder. I'm pretty good about keeping track of stuff now that I have very little left, except for this....

As far as taxes go, I'm not going to write them off because they were personal, not business, and I can't say I'm 100% sure I sent them out, but I'm 99% sure I did. I personally don't think anyone should write something like this off, why should the government pay me for my mistake?

AND, this is completely unrelated to the vacuum incident. Although I have been back after talking to the bank manager image but no food for the wolves.

I bet both 1 OZ AGEs are somewhere in your house. Just breath deep, relax and try to remember the last place you saw them.

Like others here, I would recommend going through everything again... you would likely notice if you're shipping a gold coin instead of a silver, and perhaps they are still in another box, or left in the bank or something like that. Did you sell any other coins over this period? Perhaps put back in their place?

If you still cannot find, I'm sorry.

  • Ouch, I'm sorry to hear this. Like others have said hopefully it is somewhere around your house. You sound pretty confident you put them where you stated so hopefully whoever got them has a good heart, but with these current gold prices I could see many being very greedy. image

If it makes you feel any better, last week I spent two days tearing apart my inventory to locate a coin ready to be shipped. In the end, it was exactly where it should have been, but in my haste, I missed it about 5 times.

Years ago scotsman coins sent me 3 each 1 ounce NGC 1 OZ AGEs for no reason. I called and told them about the mistake. They had no record that they sent had even sent them to me. After I returned them they sent me a nice little coin gift.

    Jesse,
I have shipped the wrong coin quite a few times, wrong president, wrong mint mark, wrong year, wrong grade, but never wrong metal. I think that you would have seen the difference. So I'm going to go on record saying that I don't think you've shipped them, they are somewhere that you put them for safe keeping, and they'll show up. I looked for 3 months once for an 1820 MS65 large cent. I thought sure I knew what box it was in but it wasn't there. I searched every PCGS box that I though it might be in. I searched all the SDBs and all the places where coins might end up when not in the right place. finally I found it in a box with a bunch of NGC coins--because it was in an NGC holder. I somehow forgot it was in an NGC holder (it has a green bean, which probably distracted me) and I didn't bother to look at the NGC coins.

I think your gold coins will show up.

the only other possibility in my mind would be a shipment of multiple coins where the gold was hidden behind a silver coin when you were packaging but even that you generally have to pick up one at a time. Or did you ship an entire blue box to someone? If so, that's who probably has them and if not, I'd say keep looking.

I would recheck again, it is amazing how many times I have looked in the same box and not found the missing item and yet it appears in the box later by magic

Have to go along with Jerry here, dont give up on this idea Jesse. The same kind of thing happened to me, sending out silver dollars I could not find a nice 1894, turns out I had hidden it elsewhere. Just like your gold coins, the expensive ones we tend to set aside. You will find them, so get that horrible sinking feeling out of your systemimage---------BigE

Wow, that sucks...You gotta slow down bro, and make a mental note and system for shipping. I always print an invoice, then write the cert number of the coin in hand while packaging, and only work on one at a time...Despite the system however, during the 2008/07 ASE flips, I'd lost a few 70's and later found them in boxes which were supposed to contain 69's...Mistakes happen. Other than that, I'd lost some 1 oz AGE's and after weeks of searching I found them in my flat bed scanner, which I never use BTW...image

On the other side of the situation, I once received a $300 coin that was addressed to me, but the packing slip had another person's name/address. I had purchased a coin from the seller which I received the day before. I contacted the seller and asked if he'd like the errant coin returned to him, or I could forward it on insured if the seller would reimburse the shipping costs. The seller said the buyer was in a hurry so he'd be very thankful if I forwarded it to the correct buyer and he would reimburse me.

I shipped it on, sent the seller a scan of my post office receipt for shipping/insurance, and never heard a thing even after a gentle reminder email a couple weeks later!

In a hurry to leave for vacation I stashed a bunch of scrap gold in a closet behind
an aerosol can of cling free. The safe was already locked and hidden and I had
the wife and kids waiting in the car. Well, forgot all about that 2oz of scrap until
several months later when I thought it was time to send some gold off to the
refiner. Hmmmmmmm.....where the heck was that scrap? Did I already send if
    off in the last batch????
Well, since I retired we don't use the cling free anymore and the gold just sat there
    for well over a year.
Wife found it cleaning that closet out a couple of weeks ago. What the heck is this?
as she hands me a baggy of gold!
Moral, look in all your hiding places!

    Hope you find it Jesse!

If you sent the gold to a buyer of ASE's then you should have the ASE's which would identify which ebay buyer has the gold coins.
    Good luck.

I really believe that after some inner reflection most people end up doing the right thing.
If you did ship these coins out I believe you will get them returned to you.

I would expect you to notice if you saw gold instead of silver while packaging them up. I hope that you just put them in that safe place so you wouldn't loose them. With any luck you will find them again.

If you did send them out and the buyer hasn't already contacted you, I would expect that they will not come forwardimage

If you did mistakenly shipped out two slabbed AGEs instead of two slabbed ASEs wouldn't you have two extra slabbed ASEs in your inventory?

Same type thing happened to me. One day I walked to the mail box and saw a package addressed to me, which I thought was pretty weird because I hadn't purchased anything lately so I was a little puzzled. I opened the package and inside was a ngc ms65 Bay Bridge Comm. I was a bit confused, but once I looked at the return address I realized it was a board member that I had purchased from before. Somehow he got me and another board member confused and the package went to me. So I contacted him and told him I received a coin that I didn't ever purchase, and then I mailed the coin to the right person and everyone was happy. image
