<< <i>Very nice coin, I'm gonna guess vf-25. Here's one I picked up a few years ago. >>
Very nice! It looks like yours was an early die state as well? >>
Thanks, I'm not sure about early die states and the like, but if it is then it's like whipped topping on a sundae. I wanted it because of the semi-monster toning. I think this is one of my favorites in my collection.

Nice original XF40 or XF45 depending how much remaining luster. Nice coin!

I was getting ready to see a half dime! Nice coin, nonetheless. I would grade it EF-40, with all of the usual caveats about grading a coin from a two-dimensional image.
They that can give up essential Liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither Liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin
I broke out a couple of books (Making the Grade and Photograde) when I guessed VF-35. It is not my series so I figured I would learn something and try to guess. I was leaning towards VF-30 but then so many people, that are much more educated in the series than I, were saying EF...and HIGHER so I was swayed and pushed my opinion to VF-35. It is a fine example and maybe worthy of a resubmission for a regrade...along with variety attribution?
Nice coin, did you buy it for the variety?...I'm guessing. Congrats on the NEWP.

<< <i>Nice coin, did you buy it for the variety?...I'm guessing. Congrats on the NEWP. >>
Thanks... bought for a number of reasons: the variety, first year of issue for New Orleans, no major distractions (to me), PQ for grade, simple eye appeal (to me).
I'm not familiar with the series, but the weakness on the lower reverse seems to be strike related... will need the coin in hand to fully evaluate the details.
<< <i>This coin has a remarkable lack of contact marks, no digs, no scrapes, no dings, not even a rim bump. I dont see how this coin was circulated at all. >>
But it does have that obverse fingerprint vestige?
I still have one outstanding question:
How did the the lower part of the reverse strike appear to be so weak?
I can't imagine this to be uneven wear; but is that a possibility?
Or is it simply the result of the strike? If so, how?
Thanks for sharing this VF-25 example! I'd like to see the photos normalized for the same size. Of course, a larger photo will show more hits.
I got the urge to peruse the Heritage website for previous auctions and I was surprised to see how well my example stood up to ones graded VF-35 to XF-45:
There are a couple of 45's that are possibly slightly better, but I couldn't find any 35's or 40's that looked discernably better. The lack of hits or marks on my example is really amazing for the grade (VF-25), IMHO.
I found similar results at Teletrade. Nothing in the 35-40 range appeared discernably better (in my eyes).
With these new data points (examples for comparison), I could possibly be convinced to stretch my own personal grade to XF-40, with eye appeal which exceeds many of those listed above.
I'd personally feel very comfortable calling it a 35+ out of hand... I should have my own photos in a couple of days. The wildcard here is the size of the available images used for comparison.
I'm thinking there must be something wrong with my example to get a VF-25 grade? (Fingerprint vestige? Light dip? Both? Other?) I didn't think that they did, but does PCGS "net grade" coins?

Anthony, that is a stunning dime! Congrats. Also, on guessing the grade.
Does PCGS net grade? Sure. But I don't know what about your coin, Cameron, might have caused it. The fingerprint is very minor, IMO. Maybe the grader has a thing about fingerprints?

I now have the coin in hand with some quick photos in this post. Here is a better comparison with the images roughly normalized for resolution:
You can definitely see that my example doesn't look nearly as pristine at this magnification. But it surely still looks like one helluva good VF-25 example!

Very cool... It's an interesting issue!
It's apparently a very early die state with no hint of the 2 obverse rim cuds noted by Fortin?

It's difficult to tell without the coin in hand, but it looks like there may be some luster left in the fields?
I believe that she may have been "net graded" down due to the obverse fingerprint vestige?
Impressions? Further thoughts?
