I see the word slab used quite often on here and am not sure of the meaning. Is a slab a coin that has been graded and put in a plastic case with it's grade or is it a large coin like a silver dollar? I ask this because a large crappie is called a slab so that makes me think that a slab coin is a large coin. Thanks. Aidens grandpa

    The term "slab" refers to the plastic holder that third party grading services use to house a coin after it has been graded. It is slang term used for all coins, tokens and medals that are in certification holders.
    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    slab is slang for the plastic holder the grading companies use (there are other plastic holders, but they aren't called slabs. direct fit capsules come to mind, as well as the square plastic snap together ones, and the "capital plastic" holders.)
    or, as a verb, to put in a one of those graded plastic holders.

    Only go with PCGS or NGC graded/slabbed coins.

    Spend time here reading posts before you buy anything.

    Or as some relate....protected to a certain degree.
    I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.
