Twin to the Frankie but a Morgie - Same funky color progression. Both Raw.

I don't like either one. Maybe he bought both of them from the same person. I think that the odds of these being natural are less than slim considering these facts: Two raw coins with similar color by the same seller and the color on both is a funky purple/blue/magenta surrounded by light blue/lime green/yellow. Also, is there really a "Funland, USA"?

Too many red flags for me to take those coins seriously. Nice photos though! image

It looks like an ugly AT coin to me, which services as flypaper for those who are addicted to "monster toned coins."
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Unfortunately, you are right. Coins like that are swiped up by newbies looking for alot of color for a little money. Seasoned toned coin collectors that have done their homework, on the other hand, would stay away from coins like this. The problem is that some of those new collectors that get trapped with this stuff feel, as they should, SCREWED when they finally hear from a knowledgeable collector or dealer that they bought AT, and they might leave the hobby for good. I'm working on something right now that will help curb the problem, at least from the know what you are buying standpoint. The more people with toning common sense, the less AT coins will be bought. Hopefully. image

Another "tell" is like another poster said.... when you have more than one coin toned very much like another, it begs AT! I have quite a few PCGS toned Washingtons, and none of them are toned nearly identically! This guy has two Frankies that are quite a bit alike! "Just Say No!" to AT........... image

I apologize if that link caused problems. It didn't for me, but Keets pointed out it did for him, so if it did for others, I sincerely apologize. I meant no harm by providing it.
    I'll come up with something.

While I believe the pictured coin is AT, I disagree with the above statement to a certain extent. Coins that tone in the same environment often will show comparable toning. It is fairly common for Franklins from the same mint set card to have the same sort of toning.

if you saw just the reverse,
would you think of the toning?

The reverse looks just like many, many that are getting holdered!

Except for the spot and dark area at 7-8 o' clock, I don't think it is unattractive at all. Since it isn't slabbed any purchase should include the strong likelihood that the coin has been seen by a coin doc. Also possible that the image has been doctored as well.

    ....you fellers watch ..........somebody may win that coin and get it holdered , A.T or not ;

then it will sell for huge money

If thats just a point and click photo with no juice or saturation - I would be pretty surprised ............

I pass on these type of colored raw coins because I assume the TPG's wont holder them , then like I said, I see them graded and somebody makes a killing

    ........I'm bidding on it

AT all the way. He recently listed a 1963 Frankie with near identical toning too. As a side note, I also tend to stay away from eBay sellers whose "terms of the auction" outweigh the actual coin description 1000 to 1.

Perhaps the seller read the thread on CT, where he just 'gave up the ghost', and told, in a blog here 'How to tone coins like a pro'.

your "link" page opens as a threat with WebRoot, i suggest you edit the post and remove the link so nobody incurs a problem if they open it.

I've seen many coins like that coming from the "As seen on TV" sets from the 1980's. They take common dollars, clean them and put them in fancy looking holders. Then sell them as "Coins of the old west" to non-collectors. The cleaned coins will retone from the cheap holders over the years.

Is this real toning? Retoning under normal circumstances? Artificial toning? I would say that they are properly called cleaned and retoned, though probably not "shake-N-bake".
