Half dollar roll searchers be on the lookout for these....

Just read the post over on the precious metals forum here.This guy says he took back $650 face in 40% to his local bank....image This is what his post said;

I agree! Just last week I went to the bank and traded $650.00 face worth of 40% halves for paper money. No one buys them so I figured what the heck. The bank took them in trade with no problem!

I wonder if he was kidding? If not someone is going to hit the jackpot!

Two weeks ago the tellers at my local Chase branch told me some guy brought in $700 in Eisenhowers! His father had died and while going thru a storage bin they found them. Chase promptly shipped them out to wherever they go.

Sure they're not loaded with silver, but I would have loved to take a look thru them and spend a few!

I doubt it. People are getting over melt for them on eBay for lots of 1-10 and about spot for anything over that.

I ordered another $3,000 from my bank last week, I will let you know if I find a motherload.

I have found about $100 if face 40 and 90% in the past $10k I have looked through. About 70% of all that came from one $500 box.

Some are lucky...personally, I have never found a 40% or a 90% in all the rolls of halves I have searched. Cheers, RickO

Well, how do you make out? Does your bank charge you for ordering so many? What do you do with your returns? Do you order your second batch and get it in hand before returning your present batch to avoid your own returns?

I order about $2-$4k a time, sometimes 2 times a month. I could order more but i don't have any cash lying around right now. The bank I order them from is surprisingly helpful, and the bank I return them to is surprisingly accepting. The ladies I talk to when I need bags replaced in the coin counter ask if I find anything good. I say I do and that I'm sorry for putting so many coins in, they say "no problem, that's why we are here."

I think I could turn $10k in half dollars within a week between searching and then taking back to the bank. If I can get enough silver to cover the cash flow, I might just have my wife start looking through the rolls when we have our second child in May. However, there is about a .000000000001% chance she would even let me finish the sentence when I ask her.

a few years ago i was on a weekend fishing vakay, stopped at a branch of my bank and asked for like $50 in rolled halves, as i walked out to the truck i popped one open, all 40% next roll same thing, so i ran back in the bank and asked how many more rolls they had, withdrew another $750 from the checking account and turned the fishing weekend into a silver mining weekend, over $800 face of 40% halves, unfortunately i sold them when silver was well under 30$
regardless of how many posts I have, I don't consider myself an "expert" at anything
  • I order 2k a week. I pick them up at one bank and bring them back to another as each uses a different rolling company. Not sure if that makes a difference but it makes me feel better. If I only get 5-10 coins out of the bunch then I tend to pick up another $ 500 here and there at other bank outlets when I'm returning what I've already searched (on the same day). I'm charged $10 a week. Best week was about $ 435 in silver value. Worst was $ 20 in silver value. However, I also pull MS, no hairline, almost perfect halves out of them too. Keep errors as well. These sell for about $ 3 - $ 7 ea. on the Bay.
I sort of look at it this way, I can entertain myself in front of the TV for an hour and a half and make no $ or I can open up 4 boxes and enjoy doing it, sometimes with my kids. I just keep the boxes for fun...
  • I work as a bank teller and one day some dude brought in several hundred dollars in Eisenhower Dollars! Apparently it was his dead dads and he just wanted cash. I totally would have looked through it but my boss had shipped it out the following day when I was going to search it! haha.

Anyways, from workin in banking I always pull out any silver coins I find. They're quite easy to spot due to the difference in color when they're all in clear plastic roles or layed out. Its funny because I get these people every month asking for every half dollar roll I have, and I always gladly give it to them knowing I already took all the silver out. hahaha.
  • Interestingly enough I pick up 10-15 ikes a week and the tellers all tell me the same thing....
  • I normally find silver half dollars and only once found a silver dime that I let my coworker have. I was being nice that day. I have one client that deposits rolls of halfs he gets from the casino playing blackjack all the time. I often find many silver halves in his rolls.
