Best Valentines Day Ever!

Today started off like any other day but ending up being what I consider to be my best day in regards to collecting. The fun began when I returned home from class this afternoon and my wife informed me that I have a project waiting for me on the work bench. At first I was thinking to myself, "Gee whiz thanks for giving me something for Valentines Day." So I went down stairs and realized that the "project" was actually my Valentines day gift. She purchased me a 1000 series National Cash Register!!!

I have restored two 300 series NCR's and have felt I was ready for something more difficult for a little while now! So of course I had to tinker with it a little bit and was in for a nice surprise when I got the drawer unfrozen!!!

Yeap a Mercury Dime! But not just any Mercury dime it was a 1921 P in AG to G condition!!

So If that wasn't a good enough day my mom stops by shortly later and hands me a card with this inside

So now I am thinking that it was a very good day!!! No sooner than my mom leaves there a ringing on the doorbell..... It was the mail lady with a package that needed to be signed for..... I figured it was a coin so I asked who it was from. My wife says " Mark Feld???" My jaw drops!!! I couldn't believe all the excitement in one day!!!! Here is what was inside the package from Mark.

I really still havent absorbed everything today. I have purchased more expensive collectibles before but never had I had a day full of so many collector related surprises!!! When you mix collecting and surprises it just dont get any better!

this is a day I will always will remember for sure!!!

  • Sounds like a wonderful day that will be remembered for a long time. A ? that may be a bit off topic.. How can a merc dime grade ms68 when it's not even fully struck? Its a beautiful coin i just always thought to grade that high it would pretty much need to have a full strike or FSB??

Just like every other series some years are known for very sharp, hammered strikes and others like the 1945-P are rarely seen hammered, thus the huge price tag on the 1945-P FSB.

I look at that old register (beatiful BTW) and just think of all the silver coinage that's been through it, well worn, mint fresh and anything in between. You had a good day!

First of all, congratulations on a really great day - nice gifts. Second, you intend to 'restore' the cash register? Are you a 'register doctor'? image Cheers, RickO

  • Thanks to everybody for the comments!!! When I say that I am going to restore it I mean I am going to try to find nicer buttons and bring some shine out of the brass and protect the wood. Im not into the machines that look fresh off the floor room. Once again, thanks to everybody's comments its so much cooler when others can join in the excitement!

BTW Mark Feld is a stand up guy and I look forward to more transactions with him in the future!!!

I like those old cash registers---especially the marble ledge that they all seem to have. I read that the marble ledge was put there to check for counterfeit coins which were prevalent in circulation at the time. A merchant would drop a suspicious silver or gold coin on the marble ledge---if it had a melodious ring, it was real but if it had a dull thud, it was a base metal (usually lead) counterfeit that had been silver or gold plated.

great gift from your wife. Was there a story behind the cash register or did she just happen to find it at an antique store?
