POLL: U.S., Canadian, and Mexican coins

I realize this isn't the World Coins forum, but I'd like to address this question specifically to collectors of U.S. coins. Do you also collect coins of our northern and/or southern neighbors? If so, what got you interested in them? If not, why not?

  • Hello,

Yes I collect Canadian coins as well. I don't have too many but if funds allow will look for more at coin shows. I bought a Charlton book a few years ago.

Mexico, not really, I have a few dozen from an auction or picked up here and there but haven't bothered with buying a book on them and haven't spent the time to learn more about them. I do like their bullion issues and if money was more available for coins, I would like to buy some.
I still call my accumulation my collection!

I deal in both but collect only Mexican.

I also think that if you were to poll collectors of Mexican coins, they would have far more interest in other Latin American coins than they would have in Canadian coins.

    I collect all 3.

I started out as a kid collecting US cents & others in the blue Whitman folders with my grandparents' encouragement.

Once I found some Canadian pennies in change & then visited Canada, I started collecting all denominations of those as well in those same blue folders.

Since then, as I've found more blue folders from other countries, I have expanded to those as well, including Mexico.

I have the Mexican 1- and 5-centavo folders & am pretty much stuck on the "keys" & "semi-keys" now. I wish Whitman had made a 20-centavo folder, too..... I have almost all of those...

  • I have been doing Canadian cents, nickels and dollars for quite some time, all in MS. In PCGS or ICCS it is actually pretty tough to do as the mintage's are so low and not a ton of MS examples exist. Oh, it can be expensive tooimage My Mexican set is coming along nicely too. I am looking for a Mexican Dansco type set album, anyone know if they still make them as I haven't been able to find on?

Since I grew up with my bedroom window overlooking Canada across the river, I naturally collected Canadian coins- mainly the small cents and nickels, and later the large cents.
  • I wish the Canadian moderns appreciated a little better! There are some nice pieces but they don't go anywhere.

I like the innovative spirit they seem to have. But that being said, I don't like their colored coins at all.

  • I have a few Canadian coins, and very few Mexican coins. I'd say I am more an accumulator of those coins than a collector because I am not working on any set of any kind for either country. I just buy them when I find an interesting coin or coins at a good price.

I grew up in upstate New York, and I remember getting Canadian coins in change quite often. The C$ was worth about US$0.75 at the time, so stores didn't let them stay in the till very long!

  • I collect world pre-1946 higher grade coins by type (yes, a bottomless pit), so yes to both. Both Canadian and Mexican have gotten a little tougher lately as collectors are realizing how rare truly high grade examples are.

I collect aCanadian and Mexican coins, along with US. Growing up in Ohio, most dealers had a decent stock of Canadian coins, and there was one local dealer whose inventory was primarily foreign. My favorite Mexican coin is a prooflike 1861 2 reales. I've tried to colllect as many Canadian cents, dimes, and quarters from 1937-1967 as possible, and have some earlier types in MS.

I had a set of Canadian silver dollars at one time, but I sold it. My interest just fell off.

I've found some Mexican coins to be interesting, but you have to put limits on something. Therefore I don't collect them, but I can appreciate the few Mexican coin type coins I've seen.

Canadian large cents are amazing with the new reference books you get your Numismatic bang for the buck, as a result I've developed a passive interest in the other denominations. Mexico .. not so much.

Canadian large cents do look like fun to collect, especially the Victorian issues.

I answered yes to both, but was reluctant to do so because "collect" is much too strong and broad a description of my involvement in them. That's because:
-- I own only one Canadian coin and am not looking for any others.
-- I own three Mexican coins and am only looking for five others.
    When in doubt, don't.

I voted yes to both. I have some Canadian and Mexican coins. I think the older coins are very beautiful. Its just not my specialty.

I love all US and world coins but my primary focus is moderns and Canada and Mexico
have the most boring moderns in the world to my eyes so my interest is somewhat lim-
ited in these countries. I like some of the old Mexican copper and Canadian silver as
well as a few select Mexican moderns but otherwise tend to avoid them.

There's nothing really wrong with either of their moderns but they seems to mostly be
remarkably common because of US collectors.

When I started building a nickel collection from circulation a few years ago, I began getting a lot of Canadian nickels, so I have a casual collection of those. Also grabbed the dinosaur $4 silver pieces they've released recently. Very cool coins, but am not a huge fan of other releases. Too Perth Mint in general.

  • My newest pickup was a 1925 nickel in MS-62 PCGS and a 1925 cent in MS-63 RB. Both are tough coins.

I have been moving more and more into Mexican coins and tokens. From what I have seen, some areas are very interesting and challenging and give a lot of bang for the buck.

Probably the single most influential publication I have ever purchased was an old September 1927 copy of The Numismatist picked up at a small local coin show for one dollar. In addition to a Wismer article on Minnesota State Bank notes, there was also a portion of an O.P Eklund series which included Mexican copper coinage. I am pretty sure there were pics of a Chihuahua state copper and some of the Oaxacan Revolutionary coinage. A few years ago, I decided to make more of an effort to track down some nice pieces from those types of coinage. My main areas of interest for Mexican material are State Copper Coinage, Oaxacan Revolutionary coppers, and tokens of the norther border states. Dentuck- you posted a message a couple years ago on the Bailey book on the State Coppers and that really helped peak my interest in the area.

I tried getting into Canadian large cents, but they just did not speak to me. They are kinda like the U.S. late date large cents where all the varieties are pretty much just splitting hairs. The Mexican state coppers and the Oaxacan Revolutionary coppers were all very crudely made. So much character. There is some good research and reading material for the varieties of revolutionary coppers, but less info on the state coppers. Sort of a Wild West for copper collecting.

  • I have maybe 5 or 6 Mexican Bullion type coins. I have always thought Mexican coins were attractive. Someday, I might gve them a whirl.
