POLL: U.S., Canadian, and Mexican coins

I realize this isn't the World Coins forum, but I'd like to address this question specifically to collectors of U.S. coins. Do you also collect coins of our northern and/or southern neighbors? If so, what got you interested in them? If not, why not?

Yes I collect Canadian coins as well. I don't have too many but if funds allow will look for more at coin shows. I bought a Charlton book a few years ago.
Mexico, not really, I have a few dozen from an auction or picked up here and there but haven't bothered with buying a book on them and haven't spent the time to learn more about them. I do like their bullion issues and if money was more available for coins, I would like to buy some.
I also think that if you were to poll collectors of Mexican coins, they would have far more interest in other Latin American coins than they would have in Canadian coins.
Doggedly collecting coins of the Central American Republic.

I started out as a kid collecting US cents & others in the blue Whitman folders with my grandparents' encouragement.
Once I found some Canadian pennies in change & then visited Canada, I started collecting all denominations of those as well in those same blue folders.
Since then, as I've found more blue folders from other countries, I have expanded to those as well, including Mexico.
I have the Mexican 1- and 5-centavo folders & am pretty much stuck on the "keys" & "semi-keys" now. I wish Whitman had made a 20-centavo folder, too..... I have almost all of those...

I like the innovative spirit they seem to have. But that being said, I don't like their colored coins at all.
I have and will collect both.
Mexican coins are a prelude to U.S. coins and, I live next door to Canada (I live in the Detroit area).

<< <i>I have been doing Canadian cents, nickels and dollars for quite some time, all in MS. In PCGS or ICCS it is actually pretty tough to do as the mintage's are so low and not a ton of MS examples exist. Oh, it can be expensive too
The Mexican two volume set is #7220 when you can find them expect to pay $100. Their is an older one volume book as well.

I've found some Mexican coins to be interesting, but you have to put limits on something. Therefore I don't collect them, but I can appreciate the few Mexican coin type coins I've seen.
-- I own only one Canadian coin and am not looking for any others.
-- I own three Mexican coins and am only looking for five others.
<< <i>I get free canadian coins given to me so i hold on to them They are in a jar collecting dust so i guess im collecting them . free canadian coins are good
Where do you get free Canadian coins from???
have the most boring moderns in the world to my eyes so my interest is somewhat lim-
ited in these countries. I like some of the old Mexican copper and Canadian silver as
well as a few select Mexican moderns but otherwise tend to avoid them.
There's nothing really wrong with either of their moderns but they seems to mostly be
remarkably common because of US collectors.
I give away money. I collect money.
I don’t love money . I do love the Lord God.
Probably the single most influential publication I have ever purchased was an old September 1927 copy of The Numismatist picked up at a small local coin show for one dollar. In addition to a Wismer article on Minnesota State Bank notes, there was also a portion of an O.P Eklund series which included Mexican copper coinage. I am pretty sure there were pics of a Chihuahua state copper and some of the Oaxacan Revolutionary coinage. A few years ago, I decided to make more of an effort to track down some nice pieces from those types of coinage. My main areas of interest for Mexican material are State Copper Coinage, Oaxacan Revolutionary coppers, and tokens of the norther border states. Dentuck- you posted a message a couple years ago on the Bailey book on the State Coppers and that really helped peak my interest in the area.
I tried getting into Canadian large cents, but they just did not speak to me. They are kinda like the U.S. late date large cents where all the varieties are pretty much just splitting hairs. The Mexican state coppers and the Oaxacan Revolutionary coppers were all very crudely made. So much character. There is some good research and reading material for the varieties of revolutionary coppers, but less info on the state coppers. Sort of a Wild West for copper collecting.
Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

I'm happy to hear that my writing helped inspire your collecting!

You get free Canadian coins from the Free Canadians, of course.
Canadians don't really turn me on at all.
