To open or not to open is the question

mkman123mkman123 Posts: 6,849 ✭✭✭✭
Got this from someone locally.

Should I open the rolls? The top one is 1969s, the bottom one is 1959 and there is writing stating 48 coins so I'm thinking a few fell out. The 1969s roll, the seller stated he used to have a box of them but now this is the last roll.

What sayeth you guys?

    Oh . .heck..

OPEN !!!! What is the reason for NOT doing it?

    I hope you have 4 Doubled Dies. An MS68, 2 MS67s, and a spotted MS64.

Milk them out to the market carefully to maximize the profit. I think you'll make $206,000 if you do it right.

    Go for it!!!

Those are not original rolls from the era. Might as well open them.

Heck the one roll even says it has MS70 coins inside so you better pull those ones out! image
  • THOSE are vintage rolls? Open. Whats to lose. If original - how did they get "graded"? I dunno. I'm tired.

I'll prob open up the 1959 and see what they look like. The 1969s.......I'd like to keep it the way it is and just think that there could be a DDO in there lol image

There is a decent RPM that could be in it.

  • These are just common bank rolls. Gahead and open them and do a roll search. You never know what might be in there.
  • I'd open them too and hope for the best , as pointed out they are not original rolls and the ink seems a little fresh.

the ink looks newer than the paper.

  • put them on ebay, after you have properly placed them in a light emitting window to pull the colors down to a gentle fading away look- and while the black ink is freshly done on the one roll, you can easily make it look old with a bit of water wash and a dry clth to blot the water away

the appearance might fool a few fools

better yet- just open them up take a 13 second review of all of em and spend them like they should have been spent the first time!

OPEN them, both rolls. What happens if you accidentally take the roll to the bank and cash it in, then someone from your town finds a 1969-S DDO in a roll from the bank?

Might as well find out what is in them. Eventually someone will open the roll to find out, might as well be you.

Aren't they recently assembled rolls? Nothing special about keeping them intact. Open them. Maybe you'll get lucky.

I'd open the 59 and keep the 69 intact. Not sure why folks are saying the 69 is not original, it very well could be. Chances of finding the DDO are slim, but non-zero. I'd just put the 69 away if you have room to store it. I have a few similar ones myself sitting in the safe and they have a lot more value as "potential" than they probably do in reality. Maybe I'll open them up someday...

  • I had 2 rolls of 69-S cents I had had since 1969. I took them out of the paper rolls and put them into plastic tubes in 1969. A couple of years ago I opened the 69-S cents to see what I could see. I did find an 69-S with the profile doubled, part of the date doubled but no doubling on Libery. I was excited for a brief moment. Oh well, it was fun looking.

jupitarcoins I paid $3 for each of the rolls.

The guy who sold them to me is a big fan of the coppercoins site and had many pennies that he cherrypicked from rolls with the help of that site. He offered me rpms, bies, etc but I don't know those things very well and passed. Person mentioned that he had a box of 1969s rolls a while back but sold them to someone who bought the entire box......he does not know if the person who bought the box found anything. This was the lone roll he had left.

Open them ... they have already been searched, all you can do is look for what may have been missed. Cheers, RickO

Why does everyone think the 69-S roll has been searched? We can't see the ends, but in general those Batdorf "V" rolls are pretty tightly machine-wrapped and most that I've looked through are original.
