Want to see my NEWP 1797 1/2 Cent?

I picked this up at Long Beach Yesterday and shot a quick pic. White stuff is on the slab. The color of the pic is fairly accurate, maybe a bit more even chocolate brown than the pic, still trying to figure out the lighting with the new camera. Opinions are welcome, thanks for looking.

I noticed the way it looks too, like someone was lining up a punch by hand and didn't get it right. Probably the same guy who put the 1 above 1

. Really though, I need to do some research on these to find out things like that. I do know that I looked at several other 1/2 cents from the 1700's at this and the last few shows I've been to and this one was the first one that had been fully struck in the middle of the reverse. That's one of the reason's I was drawn to this one, the strike was stronger than the others I had looked at. The others had 1/2 cent very faint or almost non-existant for some reason. Hopefully someone who knows more about these will come along and shed some light on the appearance of the H.

I just looked at coinfacts and theirs has the same appearance on the H in half Coinfacts 1 above 1 1797 half cent

Actually the misaligned numbers generally come from a human error associated with repetitive mundane tasks. For aligning the various devices, I understand they used a jig which could be set an any radius. When you see a misaligned number, it is almost always the 1 and it happens because they finish one device, go to install the date, and forget to adjust the jig to the right radius. The 1 is the first number of the date so it is the one that is misaligned. They usually make a light tap or 2 and inspect it and then catch the error and adjust the jig. Probably not associated with drinking but certainly alcohol would increase the error rate. --Jerry

Very nice!

I like the early die state examples of this unusual coin, which show all of the design. The mint personel pushed the dies that were used to strike this coin to the limit, which resulated in some very poorly defined coins toward the end.

Many of not all of these coins were strunk over cut down Talbot, Allum & Lee tokens. Some pieces show some of the undertype from the previous piece. That can be interesting, but when it is combined with a late die state, it can also make for an odd and confused looking coin.

I have owned this example for many years. It was my first type coin for the Liberty Cap Facing Right design. When I upgraded it, I liked this piece so much that I decided to hold it.

As Bill Jones wrote, it's an early die state. Nice clean planchet, consistent color, and nice surfaces. All of this is very rare on early copper. That coin is a keeper.
