Always excited to go to the Long Beach show and this time around was no exception.
I was most excited to be setting up my 1908-S Indian Head Cent grading set in the collector's exhibit area (in the 1200s aisle near the concession area). It's the first time I've displayed the set in public and I think the exhibit ended up looking pretty nice. Hopefully some of you are able to check it out at the show. It'll be on display until the end of the show Saturday afternoon. In addition, if any of you would like a more detailed look at the set on Saturday, let me know and we can make arrangements to meet up and I can open the case up and you can go through each one in hand if you like. For those not making it to Long Beach or if you can't otherwise check it out, I snapped a quick cell phone pic of the display this afternoon:

The show itself seemed pretty active for the first couple of hours today. Met up with a few collectors (some from the forums), saw tons of dealers that I like and looked at a bunch of cool coins. Was trying to be patient and not just buy everything cool that I saw and wanted to hold out until I found something really neat that I just had to have. That moment came at Peter McIntosh's table when he showed me a cool plastic holder that held a 1909 VDB cent and a big VDB silver medal. The VDB cent isn't too bad, it has a little color and would likely grade MS63RB or maybe MS64RB. But the medal is really neat. It's a Medallic Art Co. medal in .999 silver and weighs about 7.2 ounces. It was made in the early 1960s and has some information about Victor David Brenner and Abe Lincoln on the reverse and on the obverse it features Brenner's awesome depection on Mercury in high relief. It was just way too cool to pass up:

Traffic seemed to slow down as morning turned to afternoon, but I didn't really care, I was having too much fun looking at coins. Ended up looking at lots of Indian Cents, Lincolns and even some Barbers but nothing really too interesting or worth purchasing until I came across a PR65RD 1909 Indian Cent being offered by Angel Dee's. I've been wanting to get a 1909 proof Indian for awhile and too often they are spotted up. Sure, this example isn't perfect, but I thought it was a very good example for the grade and I am very happy to now have a proof IHC. It's got pretty good mirrors (which don't really show in my quick photos), has a great bright red color and is virtually spot free (which also doesn't show too well given all of the hits and scratches on the plastic).

Will be going back again on Saturday for sure... again, hope you're able to check out my 1908-S IHC grading set!

Didn't make it to the show today, had to take care of some other business. Definitely going to the show tomorrow though, hopefully there are a few cool coins left at the show

<< <i>Very nice looking display! What's the lowest to highest grade in the set? >>
Thanks. The set goes from G04 (the lowest grade certified by PCGS to date) up through AU58 for the circulated grades. In mint state the set has MS60BN to MS64BN, MS62RB to MS66RB and MS63RD to MS64RD. I also have six PCGS Genuine examples, each with a different problem code.
For those not able to see the set at the show, you can see the entire set on the PCGS Registry with professionally done photos which I had done by Todd of BluCC Photos last year.

Claychaser, missed seeing you and TrainNut this time around, but I'm sure we'll catch up at one of the upcoming SoCal shows. Again, sorry to hear about your loss.

I have no clue what the market value is on those coins as those dates are not the type of things I typically buy... but they looked so nice and just seem way too cheap to pass up. I'm going to donate most of them all to my local coin club to be raffled off in our annual super raffle which will hopefully raise a good deal of money for the club.
I really enjoyed setting up the 1908-S IHC Grading Set and was really surprised and honored that it was given 1st place in the US Coins category of the collector's exhibits! Very cool!
Already can't wait for the next Long Beach show!

That is a good deal on all those slabbed Lincolns. That's the second story I heard about a bunch of not-so-marketable slabs being dumped relatively cheap. I mentioned a story in my Long Beach report, about two slab boxes of attributed Peace dollar VAMs being bought for $30 per coin ($22 is melt).
I tend to go to Long Beach once a year these days, and that serves me well. I mostly buy from about five dealers. If I went to the June show, half their inventory will be stuff I remember seeing from the last show. Having a good memory is sometimes a curse. By letting a year go by, the dealers I frequent will have all new inventory then.
I also want to thank you for helping me find a few buffalo nickels for my grading set. Couldn't have done it without you.
Hope to see you at our next club meeting on Monday... We can certainly use some more speakers for the club.
<< <i>Congrats Mike! That is super cool especially since it is your pride and joy. Sounds like you had a great time. I already made a colorful comment about the reverse on that medal. any insight as to what is going there? >>
On the medal it says that the obverse of the medal is Brenner's depiction of the Roman god Mercury. Other than that I know that it looks pretty darn cool!!!
The medals were part of a series issued by Medallic Art Co. in the early 1960s. I think they were made in both silver and copper. The dealer I got this one from had a few of the others in big plastic holders similar to mine and I know a couple of forum members got the others being offered. The Barber medal was the other one that I thought was awesome!
