I shipped without payment rec'd an Ebay coin,
and thought I would share the story.
On Nov. 23, a Retained Laminated Planchet Morgan
Dollar closed as part of our Ebay items that day.
The buyer, from here in L.A. called our office and
asked if he could mail a check for the coin ($62,
including Calif. Sales Tax). He had 263 all positive
feedbacks, sounded fine, and since it was the
upcoming Thanksgiving Weekend, I told Kathy
to ship the coin to him the next day when she
went to the PO. (11/24).
Needless to say, his check never arrived, and
we sent out 5 notices starting 12/9 thru yesterday,
with no response. Kathy also called him on the
phone three times and left messages (his message
changed on the third call !).
Ebay refunded our Final Value Fees, but I thought
I would warn other's, and strongly suggest you
block him -

It's obviously my own fault, and I'm not going to
miss the $62 in the overall scheme of things, but
it's irritating to trust someone, ship him his coin
as a favor, and then get the cold-shoulder in the
form of no payment or return call or explaination.
I do ship 'open' to new customers sometimes, depending
on my 'feel' of the person, but I was off this time.............

I remember in the early 90s I was hooked up on "Dealer Net". I don't know if it is still
around but I think it is. Talk about scared. Back then if a guy had something on there
for sale or wanted to buy something, the deal was he sent you and you sent him
supposedly at the same time. It was to get to each other at the same time and I've
done it for large amounts and thankfully never got burned. There where some horror
stories but I guess I was lucky.
You just can't send things without being paid. People will take advantage of you but
there are the few times it is just a mix up on their part. Sure hope you get you dollars.
One of these days we have to help you figure out how to add an icon to your name. Or is that an error ?

one I picked (the cover of the "Top 100
U.S. Mint Errors" book, was too large
apparently, so we're trying to adjust
it, and with any luck, I'll have an icon
above my name today or tomorrow !
(for the first time since 2002 !)
One final thought ... my Mom found herself in a hospital for nearly 2 weeks this month (she is doing fine now) and all of her personal business obviously had to be ignored. I wouldn't "write anyone off" involving $62, perfect"263" feedback, and a Laminated planchet Morgan. That is not the general profile of the "bad guys" I hear about in the coin biz.

I remember my first purchase from Fred (years ago). It was a missing reverse clad Ike . I called in my order and I put off mailing the check for 3 days and was totally surprised when I recieved the coin the same day I mailed the check !!!
I've bought a few things from you over the years from your mail order lists and sleazeBay and was always impressed with the fast & FREE service, even when using Registered Mail. You obviously mailed my stuff before receiving payment a few times.
You've always been a head above the regular dealers and I hate to hear that smoebody took advantage of it.

Like I said, it wasn't the bucks, but the
fact that I talked to the guy myself on
the phone, and he seemed 'normal'.
(or, at least as 'normal' as most of my
customers are !)
Believe me, after 40 years in the business,
I'm not angry/bitter/etc., but I thought
I should warn others, like I see here on
ocassion.

anybody that pulls a fast one gets their name posted on these boards and (unless they swiftly straighten it out ) instantly gets their reputation shot to he!!

so only the Final Value Fees were refunded.
And, we noted over the past month that he
did other business on Ebay AFTER he bought
our coin, so it is a bit mysterious why he would
ruin his rep for $62...I just stated the facts.

Not many will ship before receiving a check. He sent the check, and it got lost in some back corner of the USPS. Now he thinks he's being duped around by you. He believes you received the check because it shipped and he has the coin. The buyer usually has the upper hand in ebay in conflicts, and he believes he's in the right, and does not see a reason to communicate with you. There just has to be something like that going on, because it's just $62.
Back when eBay allowed us to accept checks I would routinely send out the coins on the promise the check was mailed. Certainly I never held a coin for a personal check to clear. I wasn't burned and collectors appreciate the ultra fast shipments.
These days? No freaking way. We even went on vacation to Hawaii a couple of weeks back and I had to take two coin packages on the trip with me as the buyers hadn't paid yet. I figured when they did- even if during the week we were gone, I'd simply mail them from Hawaii.
You guessed it. Neither paid and certainly had I mailed them with the hopes they would have I'd have just given away two (more) free coins. Upon my return I sent another batch of invoices and one paid fairly quickly while the other required a non-payment complaint before payment arrived.
eBay is not what is was even just a few short years ago and honestly, the fun of selling has diminished to the point it is little more than a chore.

Well said! Always take care of issues or they will become bigger issues. We all make mistakes, but correcting them is paramont.

The same thing happened to me. I shipped a coin first before I received payment. I kept sending emails to remind him. He kept saying he would pay. This went on for 30 days until I filed an unpaid notice. It was a PCGS MS 62 PL Morgan.
Over 376 positive transactions on ebay. He was my first bad transaction. He should be proud of himself.
He is top_shelf_coins on ebay.
He has 100% feedback on ebay but all his feedback is private. So there are bad apples out there even with 100% feedback. He repeatly would reply that he would pay me but never did. He was lying all the time.
