    I must say that I have to agree with Stew.

    You cannot forget a coin! I remember this one in Cleveland in 1972 as the coin is hammered!!! The details are spectacular, particularly the hair and star #1. The obverse was simply awesome. If you had to nitpick, the reverse was less spectacular than the obverse but that is the extent of it.

    It was in one of those blue WEB (spiderweb) 2x2 square envelopes. Did the envelope come with it?

    My thoughts. I have no knowledge of the history of this coin other that what I read in this thread.

    Probably one of the first ones off the press, perhaps supervised by the mint director (maybe a little extra striking pressure?) and captured carefully for presentation to a dignatary or friend as I understand was common in the first few years. Obviously passed down from generation to generation without damage (or possibly stored so well and carefully that it was lost for generations and then found).

    Amazing and rare for a coin to survive like this.

    The coin is the Norweb specimen. Sure would like to know where the Rogers specimen is though! The Rogers coin has not crossed the block since Numisma '95 >>

    The info written about the Hepner-Rogers specimen is still accurate, however.
    PNG member, numismatic dealer since 1965. Operates a retail store, also has exhibited at over 1000 shows.
    I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.

    I saw the coin at a show several weeks ago. It was a pleasant reminder that amazing coins like THAT actually do exist. Sometimes, in my day to day dealings, even including some very cool coins, it is easy to forget that fact.image

    Well, I have no objection with TDN removing the coin's reverse (looks like when it was auctioned off it had a Connecticut copper's obverse for the reverse) and having it replaced with a more appropriate reverse. No wonder it only sold for less than a million dollars.
