Which of these 1894 2 1/2 libs do you like better?

Why?

They are both graded MS 65

The first coin appears to have better luster, but the second appears to have better surfaces, almost PL from the photos. I like both coins, but I think the second one might technically be a better piece.

The obverse of the first one appears to have a fairly significant pitting issue near the third star, is this correct?

  • The photos appear to be taken in much different conditions but the second coin appears to be much better.

I do not have the coin in hand so cannot comment on your question.

2nd. BUT! It is hard to judge them fairly when the photos of the first clearly do not measure up to the quality photos of the second.

I like the image of #2 (NGC one) better.
  • Sorry - I can't compare 2 coins photographed in such dramatically different ways.

Based on the photos alone, I like coin #2 much better than the first coin.

Posted apart from each other in GTG threads, I would have given coin #1 a lower grade than coin #2. Coin #2 looks PL, but I can't say that coin #1 doesn't.

Coin one has original color to me.....coin 2, although prooflike and reflective I think has been dipped at one time.

  • How can you tell via an image? The second coin clearly looks NCS'd, but with out it in hand its hard to confirm. This would explain why the coin might be Pl.

Images do not tell the entire story of a coins true quality.

I'd have to go with the top one.

I'd have to go with the 2nd one. The first one has too much rev field chatter which imo keeps from being an honest 65...not to mention the planchet flake that TomB pointed out.
Even under the diff lighting conditions the first coin looks like it was MS70'd and the 2nd one has an interesting cameo/PL look.

MS70 is a dip solution similar to the old jewel luster but not quite as aggressive. My local shop puts a lot of its gold and silver in it before sending coins out to PCGS. The gold coins come out glowing or almost flourescent but in a sort of unnatural way.

The 1894 brings a substantial premium in 65 grade. It needs to be all there for me to pony up 65 money for this date.

Ignoring the images, I ahve seen coin #2 in hand it is a stunner. I think it would be hard to beat.

Looking at the images I think coin #1 has more flash and a few more ticks on it. It would depend on the look desired. For me it would still be coin #2 with the PL look.

Agree. Under different lighting, the first one may look better.

It is hard enough to grade from pictures, impossible for me to grade from such different pictures.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.
  • #2. Smoother surfaces.
  • #2 seems to have more even surfaces and luster, though may be completely different in hand.

Have Todd shoot coin #1 so we can compare with consistent photos.

I would prefer the second. Boy, if the second had the luster of the first that would be a real stunner!

I like the first one better. It looks to have great luster. The strike on the second is better and it has fewer marks but I'm not a big fan of mint state coins that look PL.

Under the same lighting both coins could look very much the same, but as they sit, the NGC coin looks much better.
