WOW. "Well matched" doesn't even begin to describe these pieces. I hope they're never broken up.

Edited to add: But where's the Indian Cent? image

Positive BST transactions with: too many names to list! 36 at last count.

Hi everyone, these pieces were found recently under a wooden pillar that was being repaired in a church here in New England. They are all mint state pieces... which is truly rare! If anyone would like to see them ,I will have them on display in Boston at the Baystate show . Todd ,as always did a fantastic job with his imaging! Enjoy !image

Cape is being modest here.....The coins are fantastic and amazingly well matched. Mint state is an understatement.

To add a little history about 1872, On Nov 5th Ulysses S Grant is reelected President. Also on Nov 18th Susan B Anthony votes for the first time and she is served an arrest warrant and in a subsequent trial she is fined $100 which she never pays the fine.

Lovely coins. When do you think they were put there? The holder Doesn't appear to be from 1872.

Great coins, and better story. Although the toning isn't fantastic, it is amazing how they all match.

I am curious as well about when they think they were placed there. The tape and holders appear newer then 19 th century. And how did you come about them.

They walked into the Coinfest show and a dealer friend of mine purchased them.... I saw these first thing last Thursday at dealer set up in Baltimore, among my buddies new purchases. I'm trying to find out the name of the Church.

An inadvertent (sp?) time capsule of coins. I like it! Bet some kid knew where it was hidden and stole the penny to buy some candy!

This thread is a good opportunity for us to see an example of "original" toning on Seated coins that ostensibly have not been touched for a very, very long time, regardless of whether the holder turns out to date from 1872 or not. I actually find the toning quite attractive for its originality. If the coins had been dipped or conserved by NCS, this set would be no more impressive than any put-together set of the date.

Too bad the person who stashed the coins didn't have the foresight to choose "CC" mint examples of the dime, quarter, half, and dollar.

Thanks for posting these wonderful pieces!

CC examples probably didnt even make their way out to the East coast for actual circulation, at least not in any quantity...

Spectacular, especially with a very interesting provenance. How did NGC grade them (looking at the prongs)?

Extremely cool findimage. I love well-matched (proof and circulation strike) sets of Liberty Seated coinage and this is a very seldom encountered selection in what appears to be high-grade. I believe such sets were more common 50 years ago, now they are rarities, and not much is needed to appreciate them.

    Thanks for the postimage

Collectors commonly ordered coins from the mint and would receive pieces like the ones illustrated. But, you have to order separately from each mint, and if the coins had already been put in a sealed vault, you were out of luck.

Nice group of coins. Why were they put there? Is there anything more to the background?

Scotch tape was invented in the 1920's so those coins must have been re-interred at some point. Very cool set. What are the NGC grades?

Wonderful matched set of what appear to be MS64-65 coins. Everyone loves the CC's....but I'd rather they'd have an S on the back so they'd be a cool & underrated set. Glad they were shown to a knowledgeable dealer first as I could have easily seen a local B&M shop dipping these out to make them "look better and grade higher."

The 1870-1872 Philly coins don't get quite the attention of the earlier Philly dates, but in many cases just as tough.
