10,000: Complete Mercury Dime Variety Set 100%; Give away, too. Winners announced.

fcloudfcloud Posts: 12,133 ✭✭✭✭
As I start writing this looking at mostly a blank screen I wonder what I should do. Should I just do a give away and draw a name out of the hat? Should I make you work for it and see if you can figure out my all time favorite coin or coins? Do I mention all the great people here whom have helped me over the years, and if I do that I know I would miss someone which may have unintended hurt feelings. Many of those people are no longer on this board for one reason or another and many are.

I never lurked before joining, so I didn’t do an intro thread and some here thought I was an alt ID for someone else. I didn’t get it then, but after a little while I figured it out. image

There was a very active group of Mercury Dime Collectors in which were called Mercateers, and one member even had T-shirts made up for us, as that was eight years ago mine no longer fits.

I knew from the start I would use this thread to make the announcement of the completion of my Mercury Dimes Complete Variety Set, Circulation Strikes (1916-1945); even though, my set has a number of non-MS coins. The adventure moves to be about three years since I made the decision to complete the set. The last two came in today, and they are 1935-S/S FS-501 AU50, and 1945-D/Horiz D VF30. I most likely will continue with some upgrades.

I had help from some message board members with coins and some with pointing me in a direction where a coin may be located.

Thanks you to these members:

Fairlaneman, thanks to one of the original mercateers, who took the time to explain to me the finer points of the series. I used to think blast white was the only way to go (maybe that is a mid-west thing). Ken set me straight on the finer points of color and now I prefer original whatever original is. There are some awesome toners out there and there are some nice ones in my set. There is more coins in the set from Fairlaneman other than the 1919-S.

Mercunum, thanks for not posting your coins in the non-band set, as you would have wiped me out anytime you wanted. Also, thank you for one of your extras which now resides in my set. image

Blu62Vette, thanks for playing middle man and getting me connected with my 1945-S/Horizontal S.

DIMEMAN and keyman64, thanks for all the support and PMs. It sure is a fun series to talk about.

19Lyds, thanks for the support of another variety guy, as you know how tough it is to locate what you need.

Wondercoin, thanks for your help and support.

Harry779, thank you for all your searching and sending me a 1935-S/S which must have been another variety, but your help is greatly appreciated.

PQPeace, thanks for the 1939 MS68 which was the first MS68 I had. Also, great discussion with you at the show in Milwaukee this summer.

And EVERYONE else. I has been fun since I started to post here in August of 2002. A few months over 8 years to reach 10,000, so I know Russ would call me a Piker if he sees this thread.

The giveaway will be a 1953-D/D Gem Red Lincoln Cent.
The rules:
Simply post to this thread and you will be added to the drawing. Your names will be tossed into a had and my wife Linda will pull one out on Lucky November 13.

Second chance giveaway some random responder 1953 RED BU Poor Man’s Double Die (which we all know isn’t a double die, but some over used over polished die), but what the heck it’s free.

    Tony,

Congratulations to you on the posting, but especially on the satisfaction of the 100% variety set. Quite an accomplishment and, given that it is a series that is no longer current, you don't have to worry about "next year" other than just upgrading or some new variety occurring image

image CONGRATS ON THE SET COMPLETION!!! image

I hope to be sitting there with you one day....with a 100% Complete Set!

I have been on here for 6 months and just past my 1,000th Post this weekend....at this point I really cannot imagine reaching 10,000 posts. The time you have spent on my annoying questions has been greatly appreciated. The past 6 months would have kinda sucked without you being around. You and DIMEMAN have been my greatest help here on the boards. The knowledge you have been able and willing to share has meant a lot to me. I have learned a lot in such a short period of time and I owe a good bit of that to you. Please do not get bored and run away now that your set is complete; please stick around for another 10,000+ posts...and another few hundred PMs from me. image We have not agreed on everything(most people don't) but the experience has been awesome. We need to stick together and support each other in the tiny coin realm. image

Don't forget about the little people like me when you find an MS67FB or MS68FB or MS69FB to replace your lower MS varieties. Thanks for the recent 37-S DDO! I really had my doubts on finding one of those....not many of those around. Out of the 26 varieties, I have been able to obtain 11 of them in 6 months....Some are not in PCGS holders yet. Soooo many varieties left to go...and as you know they are the true KEYS to this set....the hardest to find.

    Thanks Tony!

    Greg

    Ron,

If the add the 1942-S Inverted S to the CPG I already have one graded by PCGS, I would just need to send it back for attribution.

Completing that set is one heck of an accomplishment. Some of those coins obviously required serious legwork. A hearty congrats!
