A guy walks in to my coin shop...

MeltdownMeltdown Posts: 9,256 ✭✭✭✭✭
I was hanging out at my favorite coin shop the day before yesterday when a gentleman came in selling his collection he had started as
a kid. He'd hung on to them for 40+ years... nothing special really, some wheaties, common morgans, barbers, etc.
We get to talking while his collection is being evaluated and he says he's leaving the country this Friday. I guess he lived
overseas in China for 15 years or so before coming back to Portland to help take care of his aging parents.
That's over & done with now and he's "selling everything" and headed back overseas.
He asks me if I know anyone looking for a nice motorcycle and points out the window to a Honda 750 Shadow Aero.
It's pretty nice looking, so clean & shiny you could probably eat of of it.
He gives me the key and says "take it around the block... It's been on Craigslist for 3 weeks with
no real interest and I'm just going to take it back to the dealer and get hosed on it."
I tried to say no thanks, but he was pretty insistant... "write me a check for $2k and it's yours!" I chuckled and declined.

At the end of it all, I take his name and number and head off to work at my "real job". I later did a little research on it's value and I thought about it overnight.
Yesterday morning, I called him up and asked about the title - in his name & paid for with the original bill of sale.
"Has it ever been wrecked or laid down?" Nope. He bought it brand new in March of 2008 for 8 grand...
I met up with him that afternoon for a burger & a beer. I gave him 2K cash, we signed the title over and he gives me his $300 riding jacket & helmet to me for free... said he wouldn't be needing them anymore.

Here's the bike - I just took photo's of it this afternoon.

    That is really cool! Congrats!

So, are you going to ride it or flip it, so to speak? You could buy a nice coin with the profit.

Me? I'd keep it and use it for touring. Carry an extra helmet and pick up chicks. Well, I'd never get away with the last part.

I've got six or seven bikes. What's one more?
    Lance.
(I did actually flip a bike once; got a little too hot into a corner at the track in 2001.)

Well, the wife is pretty insistant that I can't keep the bike. I didn't even have time to tell her about the deal,
other than a phone call to say "don't freak out, but I'm buying a motorcycle today" image

I don't know what I'm going to do just yet.
I asked the neighbor girl to come over and watch my son today for a bit and took it to the shop for a checkup & oil change.

    Hi,

Congrats image Craziest thing I ever saw in a coin shop was a few months back. An old old guy came in struggling with some million or so in gold bullion. He could not even carry it and the dealer did not want to buy that much. It was really unusual.

    Best,
    Eric

No, that person purchased from the inventor.

That's a heck of a deal. It shows you how bad the economy is today. It also helps that you are buying it at the end of the riding season. You can sell that bike for a nice profit next Spring.
There is no "AT" or "NT". We only have "market acceptable" or "not market acceptable.

Yes, I paid for lunch. image
He had a roughly $800 worth of a collection.
There was a partial album collection of circulated barber halves, no better dates but they appeared original.
He had roughly 10 or 15 circulated morgans & peace dollars... a set of Kennedy's, random 70's mint sets and a partial collection of wheaties.
I wasn't the one going through his collection, I was mainly just there hanging out.

Like I said, it was simply the right place & right time...
Now to convince the Mrs. that I REALLY want to keep it. So far, we're at a stalemate. image

Keep at it. If you're persistent maybe she'll throw down the old " Either the bike goes or I go!! "

Then you'll really have a decision to make. image

This is good advice. I don't ride on the street anymore but our mantra used to be:

1 - Dress for the crash, not the ride
2 - Ride like you are invisible to car drivers
3 - Think "Everyone is out to kill me"

    You'll be fine! image
