Can you remove marks from a cleaning by making it a pocket piece?

If so, why not take the PCGS coins in a genuine slab in your pocket and then get reslabbed?

    If you wear off the cleaned surface, you can "fix" the coin, but depending upon the amount of work that has been done to it, you might need to wear the coin down at least one grade, possibly two or three grades.

    For example a coin that is graded “Unc. details, improperly cleaned” would probably need to be worn down to EF before the signs of the cleaning are gone. An AU coin should show broken mint luster, and if some mint luster is left, the cleaning marks will probably show also. An EF coin has great sharpness, but all or virtually all of the mint luster will be gone. If a coin has been heavily polished it might have to go down to VF. The other wild card is toning and the look of a properly circulated surface.

    Yes wearing a piece down to a gradable condition is possible, but you will have to sacrifice sharpness.

    I personally think all this cleaning designation stuff is partly guess work or a cop out by graders erring on the side of caution.

    cleaning may go away with a resubmission...if its not that extreme.

    Yes, and again, BillJones has nailed it with his explanation. Many cleaned examples are AT'd to hide the cleaning, and then promptly purchased for a premium. I do not care if someone puts it in an envelope on the window sill, the water heater in the garage, an oven, a folder or anything else to induce or speed tarnish - it is all AT. And most seekers of tarnish are buying it at a premium. Cheers, RickO

    It's easy to do but it does create a slight problem with attribution, particularly if one keeps his hands in his pockets for very long.

    Maybe it's the 1964-S?

    I have thought about this--but, it strikes me as a form of coin doctoring that wears away and destroys part of the coin in question. It could be that in twenty or fifty years, collectors will be more forgiving of improper cleaning in proportion to overall net grade. And so, I can't contribute to coin destruction for short-term gains, though I might consider it for high population coins of limited rarity and worth (which might very well defeat the purpose of the idea, I realize.)

    I'd like to add that if the cleaning went into the recesses of the coin, then no amount of jangling in your pocket will remove signs of cleaning. At least not until it doesn't matter anymore.
