    I try to avoid the "but for" coins. That is, "it would be a nice coin, but for the...."

    I try to avoid anything I think might have been conserved.

    Plus I have learned to really focus or I'd be too tempted to buy just any cool coin I could afford without actually building a collection.

    Much more selective. No coins with spots or dip residue.

    My standards have not changed since the 1980s. I buy mostly AU coins for the early years and Mint State and Proof for the more recent period. I prefer original pieces, but some pieces that have been dipped can work for me if I think that they are attractive.
    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    on the paper side i was always selective but now im down to just nationals and any under priced notes that could be cherried.

    coins im still picky on gold but really i dont see the value in numismatic gold anymore. the prices have remained in the same range for the last 5 years. if i see a nice coin ill consider it.

    Absolutely more selective than in the past, but still not selective enough.

    My last purchase in May was not a good decision. I know my weaknesses but still fall victim to them sometimes. I don't get to many shows and I will only buy what I can see in hand, and therefore I sometimes buy a coin because I needed one and it was available at the show... even when it was not a great example. The last purchase was not a good example for the grade AND overpriced. Bad combination.

    New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

    I am more careful with coins from unknown [to me] sellers. New fakes are reported almost every week on the forum, often fake slabs, often from domestic [U. S. based] sellers.
