Should I re-submitt or just bite the bullet and dip it?

relicsncoinsrelicsncoins Posts: 8,286 ✭✭✭✭✭
This coin on it's first submission was put in a genie for Questionable Toning. The toning is very light to begin with and is what I would call neutral toning. It neither adds or detracts from the value of the coin. It's the type of toning that would dip off quite easily. Should I try one more time or just dip it off and send it back in? BTW the coin was graded MS63/63 on an Anacs photo certificate.

    Oh my . . . . .!!!

That looks superb. I'd just resubmit. It is too bad it might take 2 fees to grade it, but that is a super coin . .

Thats a shame! That looks about as natural as toning gets. Think about it. If someone artificially toned that coin wouldnt they have made the toning much more prominent? image

If you dip and resubmit it might not get past the coin sniffer.

Sniffer's not in place yet. Still testing. Sometime in early 2011, according to HRH, and only Secure Plus.

Nonetheless, I would NOT dip that. I'm shocked it didn't grade. Try it again. Sucks to have to pay the fee twice.

I'm in the no dipping crowd.

I see nothing wrong with the toning on this coin and believe it to be original. Then again I'm not a "professional".

it's already got an anacs photocert? I guess i dont understand why you submitted it in the first place... thought you collected it as is.

anyway, the coin's color looks fine, and MS63 from here

I would neither dip nor resubmit. either keep or sell.

I have been submitting some of my better coins, in the event I ever to sell them, or my family does. They will realize a much better sale price if in PCGS plastic, that's just a fact of life. Nothing is certain in life when it comes to finances and a job, especially in this economy. One thing is certain right now, I have a job, and I can afford the grading fees. If I were to lose my job, it would be difficult to justify hundreds of dollars in grading fees when there is no income coming in.

I plan on keeping all of my certificate type set, only some of the coins will also be in PCGS plastic.

It's a shame I even have to ask this question about this coin, especially seeing some the colorized coins that have made it into plastic.

Just to give you an example:

Just think what I would get for this coin if I were to sell it essentially raw with the certificate, compared to what I would get for it now in plastic. I think you can see my reasoning.

I would also be a bit steamed to have that coin sent back for questiionable toning. I can also understand your consideration of a quick dip if they won't grade that coin. To me...sending that coin back for QT is almost like them inviting you to dip it. Sad. I'd rather own the coin as it looks but in terms of long term preservation of its value, I understand your desire to get it in a graded slab. I would probably give it one more run as is...and if it didn't make it...give it a quick bath and send it back the way they apparently want it...blast white!

Chiming in with my 2 cents: Do NOT dip. That would be a travesty. The color is as original as the day is long.

I really believe that all the TPGs are afraid to grade a coin with color. In the
pass there was not the great value on toned slab coins and again I think
that they Genuine or Detail coins in fear of repercissions against their companies.
After all these years with coins in so many different types of holders from earlier
grading companies to the tissue wrapped coin is a little bag in your Father's closet
to so many types of coin albums the understanding of a NT coin may have escaped
them on what is NT or AT.
With the art of AT having so improved just like the cleaning of coins has TPGs are gun
shy of all but the older toning of coins, ie: sitting a mint set holder, other packaging
from the mint and other ways they can have faith in that the coin is NT.

Don't dip! It's too nice. I'd rather see it unaltered in a Genuine holder than altered in a graded one.

Natural and non-descript toning. Adds nothing. Could even be the results of a poor rinse after a previous light dipping. That date can dip out very well. The toning doesn't look like it's deep enough to hide flaws. In hand, if I saw it the same as it appears from my analysis of the photo, I would unhesitatingly dip it. Looks like a potential 5-6 liner. If you want to protect your family's interests, you won't want them selling this coin in a "Genuine" holder.

Do not dip! Nice coin, don't strip it. You can sell it just the way you bought it.
There is no "AT" or "NT". We only have "market acceptable" or "not market acceptable.

short story another member traded coins with me heads up, he had found and bought an anacs ms63 type c quarter he took it out and submitted to our host it came back a AU58 he was totally surprised by the downgrade. As this person knows i got hooked on this series and he was helping me build my set, i was sending in 8 coins so decided to get the AU58 taken back out and the other coins sent to me. I submitted the coin with no other b"s or C's Just got the coin back last week MS63 . Now talking to these other individuals and how a coin can be a au58 1 week and than a month later ms63 makes you kinda wonder. Don't dip, resubmit image

Even "retoned", it's purdy. I'm suggesting it was previously dipped.
That's my view and I'm sticking to it. Re-submit and leave the "doctoring" to another, or find a different hobby.

You got robbed. I would NOT dip it for sure. I wonder what PCGS was even questioning? Does the coin have a hazy film on it when tilted under a light?
