Poll: where are you on the numismatic food chain?

Like a lot of areas, numismatics has a food chain. Where do you see yourself in the big scheme of things?

I am mixing metaphors here, mixing fresh water, salt water fish and mammals:

Guppy - tiny fish, they even eat other, and eat their young
Bait fish - not worth reeling in other than to use as bait, but above guppy
Bass - good size and can hold their own

Salmon - always seem to be swimming upstream
Catfish - bottom feeder, finds treasures where others see muck
Tuna - meat & potatoes kind of ocean fish

Shark - feeds on others, feared by others
Dolphin - frolicking in the waves having a good time
Whale - get out of my way

Other - I'm sure there are other interesting fish
Investment blog: gold, stocks and more

    Interesting thread idea.

    I go back and forth between a dolphin and a salmon. It depends on what point in my personal collecting cycle I am in. Currently (no pun intended), I am more of a dolphin.

    Some people have called me whale, but there are blue whales that weigh 70 tons, and there are others that are much smaller. I'm just a nice adult dolphin.
    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    I like to see myself as the dolphin, enjoying the hobby and having a good time, but I also have strong ties to the bottom feeding catfish because of my frugal nature and I voted catfish.

    Some days it does seem like the hobby has so many lessons for me, that it feels like the upstream travails of the salmon.

    My collecting habits have been a bit like a particular Blue Tang:

    I'm looking for a 1914 or a 1914-D. It's one of the two. It's whichever one I don't already have. I wish I could remember which one... But, I know the coin shop is at P. Sherman, 42 Wallaby Way, Sidney!

    Back in 2001/2002, there weren't so many billionaires interested in coins and I was only limited by what came available- maybe not a blue whale, but definitely had some heft. These days, the competition are all blues and I'm just a narwhal. Or a dinosaur as Stewart might say. image

    I'm a catfish. I make my home in the dealer junk/melt bucket. I've rescued many Morgan VAMs, including discovery pieces, in all grades all the way up to MS64. The numismatic dumpster dive is a wonderful treasure hunt!

    Can't really identify with a fish either. Numismatically if I were a bird I'd be a crow because I like shiny discs.

    Since I have captured less than .00000011 percent of the numismatic market in terms of coins. I am a probably a dozen photons of light or so that feeds a single cell Phytoplankton, which in turn is fed upon by a zooplankton...and on up the food chain.

    I have my place at least.
