Registry weenies - how many of you are in the top 5 but will likely NEVER be #1 in your series?

BochimanBochiman Posts: 25,790 ✭✭✭✭✭
....and, does that impact your collecting in that series?

Example:
I used to be #2 in a modern series. Very few coins were above what I had. I would NEVER have become #1 though, unless the #1 spot sold some coins, which was very very unlikely.
The main coin separating me from #3 was ~$500 coin (most in the series were $100 or less...some a bit more, but this one coin was $500). I decided to sell it back to the person I bought it from and put the $500 into my son's college fund a few years back. I am now tied for #3 in the series as the coin was sold to one of the previous #3 folks and they are #2 now.
I don't mind. Good for them and I still had fun.

However, since I will never be #1 there, I just let it all stay where it was/is (tied at #3) and haven't looked back or done anything on it.

Kind of the same thing for a current one I am working on. It's a classic set and I doubt that I will get #1. I'm #2 right now, but catchable. Trying to get very nice examples of the coins for the set but am starting to hit financial stoppers/roadblocks. Coins that are $1500-$3000+ each. Not a stopper for some, but I have other things to spend that much on, particularly when it is going to be 10+ coins more. So, I am quite aways out from #1 and have to make a decision.....do I even care? I'll still collect the series but futility to move forward has slowed things.

What about others? Have you hit a point where you just won't advance and because you did a registry set, it looks futile (not everything is a registry set for me and I find myself being slightly different in how I collect those and haven't been slowed/altered)?

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I think my set is still #5 in Barber dimes, business strikes. Upgrading to #1 would require changing my mostly MS62-64 coins into mostly MS66-68. That would only increase the cost of the set by a factor of, say, 50 or so. Not gonna happen.

I think I'm #4 right now in my main registry set, which is kinda neat...but I don't think I'll ever make it to #1 and that's ok. The registry just gives me a structured goal to work toward.

I have a set but I just like to collecte coins the Registry to me is just a Tool or a way to see my coins and keep some what track of the holderd I have. I could not holder all my coins it would cost me alot of $$$$$$ but if I do just a little at a time. It will not kill me. That is why I have my some day box some day they will be in a holder. But as for 1st 2nd 3rd I dont need all that. I'am happy just looking at my Collection in a holder or in a dansco or just siting in my little box That is what makes me happy. image

Are you serious? The PCGS Registry is by definition the world standard of coin collections, and to be #1 in any category (something I am actively working on but may never attain) requires time, patience, not to mention the ability and willingness to spend some serious money. I've shelled out $200,000 to build my proof penny collection and I am at #3. I am not upset in the least if I never achieve the #1 position. I am happy with my collection and will add and improve upon it as time and money allows.

I'm top five in a variety of sets, mainly year sets (both business strike and proof) of the 1950's and '60's. I wouldn't mind trying for # 1 for 1958 business strikes, but given my collecting tastes (toners) it ain't gonna' happen as MS67RD Lincolns outscore MS67BN Lincolns (not that I've ever seen a MS67BN Lincoln from that year in any case). As to most of the other sets, I just can't see buying the top pops for a lot of them, as the incremental increase in visual appeal (IF any) is not worth it IMO. It hasn't affected my collecting in that I always went into those sets with specific collecting goals/grades in mind.

    Let's see,

I'm #2 on the Norse medals set. Need the gold to complete but still wouldn't be #1 even if I could afford it.
I'm #4 on the CBQ basic set but I'm a low grade collector because I don't have the money for some of the AU pieces, so I don't expect to move up much there.
I'm #5 on the complete commemoratives set but I don't have many of the moderns in slabs so that's just a fluke.

So no, I don't let it affect how or what I collect. The registry is more of a showcase for me and a measure of completion. It also lets me see someone else's fine coins.

The Gerald Forsythe sets for Walking Liberty half dollars are far and away unreachable.

The LuLu short set of Walkers possesses the only 42-S in 67 and the now famous (or infamous) $109K 44P.

These sets do not affect my collection in the least. In fact, neither of the aforementioned collections include pix. The Gerald Forsythe collection is 'blacked out' so you don't even see the coin grades [I've always wondered what was the point in that]. Kudos to the Cajun collections for posting nice photos.

I'm proud of my collection and I include pix of most coins - evnentually I'll get photos of all of my coins.

I don't expect #1 will be attained, but I'm #4 for the short set, and if I can EVER find an acceptable 35D, I'll be #2 in the late date set. Oodles of work to do on the early dates - that will keep me occupied for decades.

We are all taught that #1 is the be-all and end-all. However, I've found that there are half dollars that are superior in eye appeal to the one or two that exist in a higher grade. My 35P is an example. So, even if that highest-grade coin were to appear (and I had the scratch) I would pass. Set registry is fun, but if I'm happy with my piece, I not going to be a slave to numbers.

Finally, I'd like to acknowledge and welcome RLevoi to the Walking Liberty group. That new set sports the 19S GBW piece and a host of other goodies. Just didn't have the dough to buy that 19S when it appeared on Pinnacle's website. Such a pretty half.

My registry set is "across the street," and I have long since given up on ever being #1. Part of the problem is due to fact that I'm up against extremely wealthy people and even foundations that have collections registered. Another part of the problem is that the point system is very unfair to those who collect better quality early U.S. coins as I do.

For example my best type coin is 1808 quarter eagle in PCGS AU-50. Dollar for dollar I would be FAR better off if I had spent the money I did on that piece on 20th century coins in MS-67. Ditto for every other early U.S. coin I own. A Type I Standing Liberty Quarter in MS-67 gets almost as many registry points as my 1796 Quarter in VF-25. The 1796 Quarter is worth close to ten times as much as the Type I Standing Liberty quarter in high grade.

Finally they allowed a guy to put 1804 restrike cent in the Draped Bust Cent (1796-1807) category. His 19th century counterfeit was graded MS-65, brown, and he got the registry points just like it was a real coin. He gets far more points for that piece than I get for a genuine 1803 large cent in AU-50.

With rules like that, I don’t care about the registry rankings. They are bogus.

I have won awards for “best presented set” and to me that means more. At least I’m educating people who open my sets for a look. What use are registry sets with no pictures and no descriptions? You may as well read ads in Coin World. They are more interesting.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Thanks for the welcome, JBN--my registry name is RLevoi. I've been around for awhile but haven't posted here much. I echo a lot of your comments about the folks ahead of us, like Gerald Forsythe. He has an unbelievable set of Buffalos with photos so I hope someday he does the same with his Walkers. I assume he just purchased the 21-S in 66.
As for the 19-S, I thought long and hard before I bought it, given its price, but I had seen it in hand and it's all there. It was starting to mess with my sleep (yes, I'm a coin collector) and so that was my excuse to pull the trigger.
By the way, I am looking for the right 35D myself. Tough date!

You have great taste in coins. I had a good time browsing your set. I try to visit the registry listing at least once per month. Seeing a new set come up in the rankings so high made me take notice.

Nice to hear the 19S has a good home. Thanks for the reply.

I am currently listed as #5 in the Proof Lincoln cents with Major Varieties Set Registry for which I am very happy. (Click below) My goal was always to complete the set which I have. It never was to be #1 or #10. But what makes me feel extra special is that THREE of the four collectors who are ahead of me are in the PCGS HALL OF FAME! And I expect the other collector may one day be there too. I'm just an average Lincoln cent collector with an average set but it is great to be part of the Set Registry. Steveimage

Glad you had $200k to shell out for some pennies image

And, yes, I was serious with my question, but thank you for asking.
See, I am not an elitist but I like the registry concept. As some have posted, I mainly use it for tracking the coins and fun, but I did try to get competitive in a couple of areas and, in one of them (the modern one), the fact that I could never take #1 had me bow out.
In the classic one, if I shelled out $200k like you, since it is an everyman's set, I could take #1, but I don't have that kind of discretionary income, nor would I use it for that purpose since I have a wife and kid I want to give a good life to which takes priority over even a nice hobby like coins.

So, I'll keep plodding along with my dogpaddling and deadman's floating when I am in the deep end of the pool image

I'm in the top 5 in the series I collect. Been in and out of the number 1 slot so many times that I feel like a yo - yo, no big deal. Right know we are trying to concentrate on the varieties that CONECA recognizes but are not in the Cherrypickers’ guide. We are currently up to around 250 different varieties, a lot of them are more noticeable then the few in the Cherypickers’ Guide (go figure).

I know it is just a modern series that we collect so the “old guys” don’t give us a second look, most would probable say “Collect Kennedys, does anybody bother with that series?” But when you are 14, you collect what you can aford. image

I just get what I get and put it in my inventory. But I love a bargain. I love cherry picking when you can get a coin that will cost you 3 to 4 hundred dollars and get it for $10 or $20 now that is useing your head and not jumping in the deep end but if I do I'll do it with some floaties so I dont drown. image

I got the number one spot on the PCGS Registry for my Barber Quarters ONLY
because Dale Friend, Sunnywood and Steve Duckor sold their collections.

Here's a link to my Barber Quarter Collection

There are a few potentially outstanding collections in the making now. I expect to
be bumped from the number one spot very soon by Chugum... and if YeOldeOne
ever gets rid of those soap-bars - he'll easily take over 1st place.

I'm at the number 3 spot on Barber Halves with and without Varieties... again, I seriously
doubt I'll ever get into the number one spot; I'm very surprised that I made it to the # 3 spot.

I'm in and out of the top 5 spots on the Barber Dimes - I think I'm up to # 4 on the "With Major
Varieties"... I slipped to # 6 on the Basic set... I think Chugum and rhedden knocked me down a
spot [ or two ]. Again, I never expected to get as high in the rankings as I have.

One thing I have learned from my last 15 years of collecting, always buy the best you can afford.
I hope this proves to be true when it comes time to sell.

I focus on my registry sets that I keep ATS because I can have both NGC and PCGS in them. However, I did make my sets current in PCGS just for kicks.

In both, I'm #3 in one set that is somewhat popular, and #1 in a set that isn't so popular at PCGS (3 participants). I will never be #1 in the first set because I don't want to upgrade coins I have (selling dupes is a hassle) and it's a mint set and going after every single mint-mark just lost it for me once I got all the denominations done. The one where I'm #1, I will be #1 up until the day that someone else decides to care about it enough to outspend me.

However it was fun - I did sit there and figure out how much $ it would take for me to be #1 in the first set, was an enjoyable afternoon.

it seems like having money is mainly the only reason why everyone cannot compete
on an even level. i do not feel like debating a "great set" versus the highest ranked set.
I will leave that for Legend blogs to delve into.

What may be fun is a registry set area where everyone has a set amount of money
to spend on a group of coins, has to scan in receipts to show what they paid, and
put everyone on a level playing field. then heart, dedication, hunting, etc... allow
one to progress beyond those who have money but no soul ;-)

I am currently #1 for a number of Liberty $2.50 sets and #2 for the 1900-1907 set.

It helps to collect an unpopular series few collect by date.

I believe there are are some superb $2.50 sets being assembled that have never been registered. Once they are registered I am not likely to ever see #1 again.

I am in the top five Registry Sets for Capped Bust Half Dollars, both Basic and Major Variety sets. No way I have plans to ever reach #1 in either set. There are many serious collectors of Capped Bust Half Dollars, but hardly any choose to join the Registry. If they decided to join, I would quickly move down many positions in ranking.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

I don't collect Ferraris, supermodel girlfriends, or Faberge eggs because all three are out of my price range. I certainly don't begrudge those who do, and enjoy what I do collect. I respectfully find myself a little confused by Bochiman's response that he used the registry primarily for inventory and catalogue purposes (a very good idea) but left when it became apparent to him that achieving a #1 set was impossible given his priorities (and high praise for putting your children first. The world would be a better place if more parents did). These sets are by definition competitive and not everyone will make it to number one. And I include myself in this group but at 37 years old I am hopeful that I'll continue to improve my sets for decades to come.

That said, I feel compelled to defend PCGS 's registry system. I am actually registered in both PCGS and NGC but I find that PCGS is superior because 1) they offer a wider variety of sets and subsets, 2) stronger competition in both numbers and coin quality, and 3) their (my opinion) stricter grading standards provide more prestige for their sets.

There can be no doubt that some NGC sets are better than equally ranked PCGS sets. The ones I collect are clearly in favor of a PCGS bias. A bit off topic, but it would be interesting if others who collect different series believe the same to be true with their sets.

As for the mythical unslabbed MS 69 mint sets of 1796 (lol) locked in some mansion on the east coast, they will be eventually slabbed or spent for spare change at the local drug store, depending on the intellect of the collector's heirs.

    Waltz,

It isn't that difficult. I *PRIMARILY* use the registry for cataloging, etc.
I do *ALSO* do a few sets for fun and competition. That is the impetus for the thread. And, I know myself but was wondering others.

Does that help you understand the post/thread a little better and my posts in it? I didn't think it was that hard, but happy to explain it better if you need.

As MIdLifeCrisis said about money spent. Percentage wise, I probably have a greater percent of my income tied up in my collection than the "Deep Pockets." I can't compepte with them and used the Registry as an inspiration for myself. I have retired most of my sets but still own the coins. I have never sold a coin and I certainly don't give them away. I used to be in the top 10 on the complete Commem Registry but as the popularity of the Registry grew I sank lower and lower. I am proud of my collection but unable to compete financially. My God, I work in a factory and was competing with doctors, lawyers, and heaven only knows who else. I threw in the towel and just collect now.

I'm not sure I would call myself a weenie, necessarily. image That said, I do have a few top 5 sets that have no hope of getting to be #1. Frankly, I could not care less. I'm not into competition, I'm into coins and sharing them with others.

I am only in it for the HOBBY. I actually find it amazing that I have not been shoved down the number scale and still have a few sets in the #5 spot. I figured out once that I would need over $100,000 just to get two Lincolns – the 1909 VDB Matte Proof and a 69 S DDO. If you add in the 58 DDO, you would need another $100,000. If I was a registry set Nazi, I would be concerned that even unloading that kind of cash, a person could show up any given day and list a #1 set because I do believe for every #1 set that is listed here in every series, there is at least two private sets better than the #1 set out there who do not play with us here.

I am #9 in Kennedy Proofs with Major Varieties &
#8 in Kennedy Proofs with Complete Varieties but will never make the #1
    I will never own a PR70 DCAM.
The cost involved IMHO can not be justified.
I will upgrade my 1964 thru 1968 coins as they become available.
My goal is a 100% DCAM set.

Some of you understood what I was saying/asking, and I thank you for your replies.
It IS about the fun and the actual registry doesn't change it for many of us. Sometimes, though, "you" may do a set for the competition, hit a certain point, and not really be able to move forward so, for that particular set, "one" may get "bored" and "move on" image

Thanks again to those that answered what was asked.

And, MikeinFl...yes, you are a (registry) weenie image

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
