  wasnt that denomination made specifically to cover the postal rate of the day? DOH I was thinking of the 3 cent piece,I,ll go back to my 1st cup of coffee and wake up.....btw Beautiful coin

  You are correct! I WAS going to post that very same thing, so I'll just confirm your hunch The three cent pieces WERE made to facilitate the payment of postage without the need to make change. I WILL say that Dr. Feuchtwangers coinage MIGHT have also bbeen produced for the very same thing (albeit, much sooner), as our government has always been a bit 'slow on the draw'!

  Robec that $3 is stunning! First one of those I seen posted I really liked. Nice clash also! super nice coin.
  
  Also, the Three cent coin facilitated the redemption of fractional currency, which especially in that low denomination had became truly hated.
