Gold Ike Dollar Necklace........

This came in with a bunch of other coins from a estate sale.Is this really from the US Mint like it says on the box.If so why would they do something like this?It also says 14kt H.G.E. I think that means gold plate. What is something like this worth? Thanks for the help.

With it being gold plated and with a common date Ike dollar, it has a minimal value of a few dollars.

Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.

  • It's worth more than a few bucks. I wouldn't sell it for less than 50, if you hold out you might get 75-100.
Ike collectors are hard up for anything unusual.
  • I bought a gold plated Ike, coin only for $3 retail. It wasn't my best day.

With the fancy bezel and chain, the retail value might be about $50, if you can find a retail buyer. The key is to find a buyer who likes and wants the item. Selling wholesale to a dealer will likely be a different story, and if it were me, I would expect a low ball offer, perhaps $5.

    Not this IKE collector.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

Ike collectors know that gold plating an Ike ruins the collector value of the coin.

"If so why would they do something like this?" They do this to sell product. They even have coin spoons.... check out their site. Coins are not sacred to everyone... to most people (yes MOST) they are metal discs that are used in commerce - nothing more. Coin jewelry has been around almost as long as coins have existed. Only coin collectors venerate coins. Get used to it. Cheers, RickO

Strange that nobody has asked if it is a Type 2...

Can we see an image of the reverse of the coin?

  • This reminds me of those gold plated state quarters they hawk on TV. The poor smucks buying them don't realize they are ruined for all intensive numismatic purposes, think they have something that will be valuable. I guess the "gold" ATB quarters will make an appearance soon.

Looks like a Type III Ike to me. Interesting.

*Someone correct me if I'm wrong on type, but I'm certain it's not a Type II.

  • I would say it was a type 3 due to the craterlets in the crater by LL of DOLLAR. I am a little puzzled by why the Carribean islands don't show up better.
  • Here’s my gold-plated Ike and chain. I’m late to the party because it’s taken me a week to find the darn thing! It’s not from the Mint (did the Mint really manufacture / market these?) and not as fancy as the OP’s, but it shows its own unique lack of taste anyway. This belonged to my mother-in-law; don’t know why she didn’t want it. (I also have a gold-plated Ike dollar without the bezel and chain.)
