    Here's an interesting Civil War dog tag, although I don't think that this one went to war. I believe Sergeant Horace Gardiner left this one home with his wife or sweetheart, “Mary.” Sergeant Gardiner survived the war, went back to Vermont and lived into the 1890s. He was a “solid citizen.” When I was collecting New England Civil War tokens, this piece filled my “Vermont hole” because there are no known Vermont Civil War tokens.

    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals.     I still would welcome further information on this piece I dug while out detecting. Another token (Green River Whiskey, ca. 1935) was found at the base of the same tree. A 1908 Indian cent also came up from not too far away.

    My best guess so far is that this octagonal piece is some sort of sutler/comissary token from perhaps the Spanish American War era (WW1 at the latest).

    Even though this medal was not for sale, someone made me an offer I couldn't refuse and said it was the last medal they needed for an entire group of medals from the 1915 Pan Pacific Expo. They said the set will eventually go on display in a Central California museum. image My only consolation in parting with the beautiful piece is that I still have Todd's wonderful photo to gander at now and then..... image
