"Bust quarters aren't selling right now"

That remark was made to me by a major and reputable dealer; certainly not the type who plays games. What do you make out of this?

I can understand it. The prices have spiked sharply in the past few years and I think a lot of people aren't willing to pay what people are asking. Quarters don't have nearly the following that Bust Halves do and I think a number of people don't realize how much rarer the quarters are, so they get sticker shock by dealer asking prices. That and there are some JUNKY lookin' Bust Quarters out there that people still try to get moon money for. The really pretty ones are few and far between and worth paying up for IMHO.

Generally speaking, at the very least, such broad and all encompassing pronouncements amount to exaggeration.

Were you offering him some for sale? That sounds like the typical precursor to a lowball offer...

By the way, was the comment meant to include Small Eagle, Draped Bust and both types of Capped Bust examples?image

I think that statement indicates that he doesn't fully appreciate the market dynamics for Bust coins. Most of the desirable pieces are owned by a few specialist dealers, and it sounds like he may have had some "leftovers" in his inventory that wouldn't sell. There are a lot of people collecting Bust quarters, but most of them are looking for the same (scarce, rare) dates and varieties, or better grade examples.

I have my type coins for the Bust quarters, but over the past couple of years I have "window shopped" them with respect to price, eye appeal and preservation. My impression has been that the asking prices were very strong and perhaps not sustainable.

I had a bunch for sale in Baltimore, along with a lot of other Type, and the Bust quarters sold quite well to a number of other dealers. These were mid-grade circ coins - both Draped and Capped - in PCGS holders. I had no trouble moving them at prices that were reasonably strong.

I like a lot of the answers here so far, but I suspect this one is most accurate.

The one I had my eye on just sold, it's too bad your statement didn't hold true in my case.

  • Not much is selling at prices as they were prior to the economic crisis if that is they way they are looking at it.... You can sell anything you want out of your collection, just at a lower price, at least for now.

Of course, but the key word is quality. When Legend listed all those beautifully toned Morgans from Sonnier's collection, all but a few flew out the door. And try find really nice AU55-58 Seated dollars that have minimal marks and original-looking (re)toning---there aren't many around for sale. Etc...

Speaking as a collector of draped and lg. capped quarters, I can understand the comment. I used to buy half a dozen or 10 coins a year, now havent got one in nearly 2 years, even though I shop for them almost every day. The ones I want seem too expensive, and the ones that are cheap, I already have a better one of the variety.

At this time of year a lot of stuff falls back a bit due to vacations, etc. so this statement might be accurate to a point, but is not indicative of the market in general. Perhaps this person was commenting on the market in his particular area.

Yes I agree that quality will hold it's value, but was the same quality selling even better at stronger prices when the times were good? I would think so!

I can't talk for the bust quarters, but when a nice seated dollar comes around, they almost always break records for the price in the upper grades (AU58 and up or so). The "down" market didn't have too much of an effect on them, unfortunately. image

1835 and earlier material is still quite strong. I don't see much of it around, except for imo overpriced CBHs, where the asking prices are $9K re PC material, or higher. I haven't seen a nice pre 1835 Copper coin in over a year (I'm not talking about collections being sold @ auction).

Even within bust there are a lot of market tiers. Maybe cheap stuff is selling and not expensive stuff, or vice versa.
