That remark was made to me by a major and reputable dealer; certainly not the type who plays games. What do you make out of this?

<< <i>I can understand it. The prices have spiked sharply in the past few years and I think a lot of people aren't willing to pay what people are asking. Quarters don't have nearly the following that Bust Halves do and I think a number of people don't realize how much rarer the quarters are, so they get sticker shock by dealer asking prices. That and there are some JUNKY lookin' Bust Quarters out there that people still try to get moon money for. The really pretty ones are few and far between and worth paying up for IMHO. >>

<< <i>Were you offering him some for sale? That sounds like the typical precursor to a lowball offer... >>
I like a lot of the answers here so far, but I suspect this one is most accurate.

Of course, but the key word is quality. When Legend listed all those beautifully toned Morgans from Sonnier's collection, all but a few flew out the door. And try find really nice AU55-58 Seated dollars that have minimal marks and original-looking (re)toning---there aren't many around for sale. Etc...

Yes I agree that quality will hold it's value, but was the same quality selling even better at stronger prices when the times were good? I would think so!

And when they pop up they don't stay around too quickly!

I can't talk for the bust quarters, but when a nice seated dollar comes around, they almost always break records for the price in the upper grades (AU58 and up or so). The "down" market didn't have too much of an effect on them, unfortunately.
People are holding onto this stuff.
