Thoughts on this 1868 Shield Nickel

I am thinking of purchasing this coin. I know the grade but what does it look like it would grade? To be honest I am a great Jefferson guy, but shield nickels are not my forte. I like the satin look, probably dipped at some point, but looks ok from the pic.

That is a very nice 1868 - quite well struck for the date. MS64 for sure, probably a 65 IMO.

Well struck, clean surfaces... I could see it in a 5 holder if the eye appeal is there. This is one of the few Unc Shield Nickels I have seen without major die cracks.

FWIW, this is not a popular series. If you are paying a premium for a better date, you may be buried in the coin. If you want a type coin, stick with an 1882 or 1883.

I am putting together an 1868 date set, so I need an 1868. Its in a 65 holder.
  • I could see it in a 66 holder. The horizontal lines on the shield sold me.

I would say MS-64 for sure with a shot at MS-65. You can't really differentiate between those grades from a photo.

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Now that the grade is available, and based on the pictures, I'll say 64+.
